Logan Marshall’s The Sinking of the Titanic Logan Marshall's The Sinkingof the Titanic is a book that has its strong and weak points.
    http://members.ams.chello.nl/w.postuma/titanic/books/marshall.htm
    The Sinking of the Titanic
Logan Marshall's "The Sinking of the Titanic" is a book that has its strong and weak points. Of course, it should be reminded that the book was published only one month after the disaster, and although Marshall includes the conclusions of the American Inquiry, it's pretty obvious he didn't read their report, as it wasn't published yet by the time his own book was published. The weak point (research) The author quotes lots of people, but never explains to the reader where his quotes come from. The book has no acknowledgements, footnotes, endnotes or other form of source-listing. For example, the author claims that J. Dilley, fireman of the Titanic, said that coal bunker # 6 was on fire from the moment Titanic left Southampton and that twelve people were assigned to extinguish this fire.
Marshall fails to explain where this information comes from. Did he personally interview Dilley? Did he copy the statement from a newspaper or from a magazine? Is it based on facts or just on gossip or hearsay?
Nowadays it is generally accepted among Titanic buffs that there was a fire indeed, but the exact extent is unknown. Unfortunately, Dilley's story is not backed up by any other source in Marshall's book.

    Titanic Door-to-Door Books
How did people quench their thirst for information after a major disaster at the turn of the century? After all, there was no "Dateline", "Nightline" or talk radio. So how did they get their "HardCopy" fix after a major disaster or historical event.? In the case of the Titanic tragedy (and many other disasters) door to door salesman were used to sell "disaster books". The Titanic books are probably the best known ,and most sought after, of these books.
The sales pitch worked like this: A salesman would "loan out" an incomplete copy of the disaster book to someone in the neighborhood. The "salesman's copy " had most of the illustrations, and the first few pages of each chapter of the book. A person would look this copy over and read just enough of it to (hopefully) get hooked before the chapter abruptly ended. If he liked what he saw so far he would add his name and address to blank pages in the back of the book. This signified he wished to order the complete book. He would then pass the book on to another person in the neighborhood. The book might travel up and down the block before the salesman returned to get it along with all the "orders" in the back. Some salesman would "loan" the book to only one person at a time for a short while and then return for the book and hopefully an order. Of course the more successful salesmen allowed the book to "travel" around.
The books usually came in two styles, cloth and half- morocco. The cloth version was the most popular and sold for around $1.00. The half-morocco version was a little more expensive, depending on which book it was. Collectors will of course pay more for a half-morocco version, but these are very hard to find as fewer of them sold. Many Titanic collectors like to have an example of each, plus a salesman's copy, in their collection. The salesman's copies are also hard to find since fewer of them needed to be printed.

by Jason Grotelueschen Editorial Assistant, CSD Bob Diffendal, CSD research geologist, shares lessons about rocks, fossils and earth history, with children from Chase County on the grounds of the Champion Lake picnic area. Diffendal was teaching in the Science Camps Offering Rewarding Experiences program last summer. CSD photo Outreach efforts by a group of University of Nebraska-Lincoln scientists have contributed to the success of two earth-science education programs aimed at elementary school students in western Nebraska, said Bob Diffendal, research geologist with the UNL Conservation and Survey Division (CSD) and an instructor in the two programs. Diffendal led geology field trips as part of the 1995 Water Riches Field Days program, held in May at sites of geological and hydrological interest in west-central Nebraska. "The Water Riches Field Day is something we do primarily for students who don't have the opportunity to learn about earth science from a natural history museum," said Jim Goeke, research hydrogeologist with CSD working out of North Platte and an instructor in the Water Riches program since its beginning in 1990. Programs contact significant number of students "Outreach programs like these allow us to contact a significant number of students in a short period of time, in an environment where we can point out actual applications of scientific concepts," Diffendal said.
