Comments: For a Hoosier transplanted to WV, and a school my parents went to, it is very distressing to stand at football games and not know the words to the alma mater, something every devoted Marshall student should know. Please, if space permits, include a section of the webpage devoted solely to this excellent morale builder for every son of John Marshall. Thank you, Logan K. Alley, class of 2000 Name: M. Napier

Comments: This is one of the best features you have put on line. I have had freshmen ask about the history of Marshall and Old Main in particular. How about a tour of Marshall History through pictures and including the big flood. I have seen pictures of the water in Huntington, and around the campus. They were great. Also include some of the pictures of some of Marshall's early graduate classes. I had to dig up history yesterday for one of the UNI 101 classes. It would be great to have the classes go into Internet and go through the history of Marshall. Great idea. Name: Dr. Lisa Schwartz

Gov. Benjamin Crooks 'B.C.' Burney David Calhoun Margaret 'Peggy' ... James Logan was born in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, La. 15 JAN 1844. Benjamin died 25 NOV 1892 in Aylesworth, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT, at 48 years of age. His body was interred NOV 1892 in Burney Cemetery, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT. He married Louisa 'Eliza' Alberson nr Tishomingo, Tishomingo Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT, 11 JAN 1870. Louisa was born in IT, 1846. Louisa was the daughter of Capt.Isaac 'Sho-me-cha' Alberson (Albertson) and Lucy Gaines. Louisa died 25 JUN 1904 in Durant, Blue Co., Choctaw Nation, IT, at 57 years of age. Her body was interred 1904 in Burney Cemetery, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT. Conflicting evidence states that Louisa was born circa 1853. Louisa enrolled in Cumberland, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, IT for the Dawes Chickasaw Roll on 30 SEP 1898 and appears on Dawes card number 843. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Chickasaw Nation, IT, 20 JUN 1900. Chronicals of Oklahoma, Vol. XVI, p.221, states that she is the daughter of James GAINES of Tishomingo. This does not agree with her parent information contained on her Dawe's card. She was probably the grand daughter of James GAINES. (Later evidence indicates she was the neice of James T. Gaines and grand-daughter of John Gaines.)

WINTER 2002 Volume 55, NO.1 Cemetery Chronicles Building Clemson Character by Jacob Barker This is a continuation of the Woodland Cemetery Stewardship Committee’s efforts to make Clemson World readers aware of some of the honored inhabitants of Cemetery Hill, its historical value and the importance of its preservation. See Clemson World, Summer 2001, for background on the cemetery and a profile of W.M. Riggs. See Fall 2001 for a profile of P.B. Holtzendorff. While the name John Logan Marshall might not be as recognizable as some of the more well-known figures in the University’s history, his service and dedication to the Clemson spirit is still in evidence today. John Logan Marshall was born in Greenwood on Oct. 25, 1885. He graduated from Clemson in 1909 with a B.S. in mechanical and electrical engineering. That same year, he married Grace Colglazier in her hometown of Salem, Ind. They would go on to have three children: John L. Jr., Della Jo and Elizabeth. After working several years on a farm in Alabama and then at Western Electric in Chicago, Ill., Marshall returned to Clemson in 1917 as shop work instructor. Although his starting salary was only $1,000, he loved his job and was extremely proud to be a teacher at Clemson. School administrators quickly took notice of Marshall’s talents as an educator and, in 1919, named him an assistant professor. Two years later, he was appointed head of Clemson’s wood shop.

John Logan College wins Spring Fling by BRENT MILLER
Sports Editor Goosepond Colony hosted the 2nd Annual Spring Fling collegiate golf tournament last weekend, hosting 20 schools from six states across the country. John A. Logan College from Caterville, Illinois won the three-day event by a final score of 878. The tournament, beginning on Thursday, ended on Saturday with the awards presentation held at the Goosepond Colony Pro Shop and Illinois Central College Head Coach Ron Marshall presenting the awards. Along with Marshall was PGA golf professional Barry Chandler of Goosepond Colony. "It was overwhelming," said Chandler. "I just can't say enough words to even describe what this year's Spring Fling was." Teams competing in the tournament included teams from as far as Arizona this year, with an increase of four schools being added to the tournament. The top three teams were John A. Logan College (878), Indian Hills Community College (881) from Iowa and Meridian Community College (888) from Mississippi. "We came out of the snow and played our first 18 holes of golf on March 9 at Plantation Point," said John A. Logan Head Coach Tom Ferris. "Our team then went to a course near Auburn and played there before coming back to Scottsboro to compete in the Spring Fling tournament. I was pleasantly surprised to have won the tournament."

RMS Titanic continues to capture our imagination some 90 years after her untimely demise. This online presentation reproduces selected images from one of several "instant" books published in Philadelphia and Chicago within a few months of the disaster. Story of the Wreck of the Titanic , edited by Marshall Everett, mixes fact and fiction, challenging the reader to discern lifeboats of truth on a sea of journalistic excess. It also contains some powerful editorial writing, eloquent sermonizing by various religious leaders, and selected excerpts from testimony given at the U.S. Senate inquiry into the disaster. Despite its flaws, it is a reasonably accurate reflection of how the disaster was perceived at the time. The editorial cartoons are particularly effective in displaying the public mood Jay White

    BETWEEN 1871 AND 1914
The Titanic instant books were part of a much larger industry that marketed popular hardbacks by subscription across North America from about 1850 to 1930. Also known as "dollar books" due to the average cost of the cloth-bound edition (deluxe, leather-bound editions cost slightly more), they were mass produced and sold by traveling salesmen (and women) who went door-to-door with sample books, trying to sign up customers.
Itinerant book-selling, using samples (aka "prospectuses") provided by the publisher, can be traced to early 17th century England. In North America, the practice was used so extensively in evangelical missionary work during the 19th century that it acquired a special name–colportage. By 1900, these marketing and distribution methods were being used to sell books on a wide variety of secular topics in several languages. (Mark Twain insisted on selling all his books through door-to-door sales).
Some of the Titanic instant books were produced by colportage publishing firms; others were published by firms specializing in children's books, travel narratives, political biographies, etc. The first North American disaster to attract the attention of instant book publishers was the 1871 Chicago fire.
