B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback W(illiam) Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) British novelist, playwright, short-story writer, highest paid author in the world in the 1930s. Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938), that he stood 'in the very first row of the second-raters'. Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics in the manner of Guy de Maupassant . In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. In endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." (from Creatures of Circumstance W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.

W. Somerset Maugham Quotes
It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it. The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones. People ask for criticism, but they only want praise. Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it. Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young. It's a funny think about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it. Only a mediocre person is always at his best. The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic, and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary it makes them, for the most part, humble, tolerant, and kind. Failure makes people bitter and cruel. Love is only the dirty trick played on us to achieve continuation of the species. The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit. It wasn't until quite late in life that I discovered how easy it is to say 'I don't know'. There is only one thing about which I am certain, and that is there is very little about which one can be certain.

Somerset Maugham lived a long time; almost one hundred years. He was young in Queen Victoria's England, when the sun never set on the British Empire, Europe was the center of the civilized world, and the horse drawn carriage was the preferred mode of transportation. He lived to see the collapse of the great colonial empires, the rise of America, and to fly in an airplane. He seems to have taken it all in with his usual phlegmatic demeanor. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University in Germany, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as a doctor from St. Thomas' medical school.
He abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays but he studied the craft of writing as assiduously as he had medicine, often writing out passages of other novelists. He never owned a typewriter but wrote everything by hand. He eventually developed a habit of writing four hours each morning.

"It is a f u n n y thing about life; if you re f u s e to accept anything but the best you very o f t e n get it." ~ W. Somerset Maugham British novelist William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) created tales of suspense and irony. With over 20 novels, 25 plays, and 100 short stories, he celebrated the best in storytelling and creativity " Imagination grows by exercise," he said. "Contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young." Orphaned at age 10, Maugham was a shy child who spoke with a stutter and used his lonely childhood experiences to create stories with first-person narration. With precision, he wrote his first novel during his final year in medical school. "To write simply is as difficult as to be good," he said. "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are." His most famous achievements were the largely autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage (1915) and artist Paul Gauguin's story in Moon and Sixpence (1919). Once a British secret services agent in Russia, Maugham traveled extensively to help with his writing, he listened to nuances and studied strangers.

The W. Somerset Maugham Collection
The Cushing Memorial Library collects books, manuscripts, and other items relating to the life and works of the British writer, W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965). The core of the collection was acquired by the Library from Frederick W. Frost in 1979. Frost was educated at Princeton University and worked for the Union Carbide Corporation from his graduation in 1932 until his retirement in 1966, except for four years service as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. It was during the war that Frost's fascination with Maugham began, first reading Up at the Villa and The Summing Up . Impressed by these two books, Frost decided to read everything Maugham had written, and thus his collection began. Built over almost a forty year span, the collection contains the first edition of every book published by Maugham (as well as subsequent printings and editions), many of which are inscribed by the author. The collection also contains manuscript material, photographs, screenplays, theater programmes, periodical contributions, and secondary material. The collection is especially strong in foreign editions of Maugham's novels, with seventeen different languages represented. Also noteworthy within in the collection is a series of letters from Frost to bookdealers and fellow collectors. In the years since its acquisition, the Cushing Memorial Library has continued to add to the collection. In 1982, Mary Lee Archer compiled a bibliographic study of the collection as her Ph.D. dissertation, from which much of the above information was drawn.

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)
W(illiam) Somerset Maugham, playwright, novelist and short story writer was born of British parents in Paris in 1874. Brought up originally in France, Maugham lost his mother at the age of eight. Two years later his father died of cancer and Maugham the orphan was moved to Kent, where he boarded at King's School, Canterbury. His holidays were spent with an uncle in Whitstable. About this time Maugham developed the stammer which made it difficult for him to make relationships and contributed to his shy and introverted manner. Maugham studied philosophy and literature at Heidelberg University and then in London he qualified as a surgeon at St. Thomas's Hospital. Of Human Bondage (1915) is an autobiographical novel describing his unhappiness and anxiety in early life and recounting his experiences as a medical student. Maugham served in the British Intelligence Service in World Wars I and II. In 1914 he was part of a Red Cross unit in France, later acting as a secret agent in Geneva. In Petrograd he was involved in trying to prevent the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. These experiences are related in Ashenden, or the British Agent
