to the introduction to the series as read by Rosalind Ayres. English novelist, playwright, master of the short story, and the world’s highest paid author in the 1930s, William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) may best be known for his novel and the film of the same name, Of Human Bondage . Yet his skill in writing short stories is unsurpassed. KCRW (89.9 FM) presents Ten by Maugham , a ten-hour series of short stories written by Maugham, produced in KCRW’s studios in collaboration with Jarvis and Ayres Productions, directed by Rosalind Ayres. Ayres, who among many other distinguished credits appeared as Elsa Lanchester in the award-winning film Gods and Monsters , directs a cast of highly accomplished British actors, including Michael York, Martin Jarvis, Alfred Molina, Carolyn Seymour, Miriam Margolyes, Christopher Neam, Anthony Jay, Kenneth Danziger, Simon Templeman and James Warwick. Music for the series was specially composed by Toby Jarvis and Stuart Hancock of McAsso Music. Executive producer for KCRW is Jacqueline Des Lauriers. It has been said that there is a finish, a neatness, an air of accomplishment about every work of Somerset Maugham’s which ensures a certain quality of pleasure. Maugham’s irony and cool detachment make him an acknowledged master of the short story. He had a wry perception of human weakness and unique talent for evoking a sense of time and place; an acute and often sardonic observation of human foibles and a particular genius for exposing the bitter realities of human relationships. Maugham creates concise dramas played out by unforgettable characters, all of which make for compelling listening.

British novelist, playwright, short-story writer and highest paid author in the world in the 1930s. Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938) where he writes that he stood 'in the very first row of the second-raters' . Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics to the manner of Guy de Maupassant. In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favour with the intelligentsia. In endeavour to bear my misfortunes with fortitude."
(from Creatures of Circumstance, 1947)

The personality behind the celebrity
Somerset Maugham bonanza places Special Collections on the cutting edge
by Brian Fitzgerald Each year thousands of scholars troop to Commonwealth Avenue to see the Department of Special Collections' rare books, manuscripts, papers, and other eclectic memorabilia. But a recent acquisition, the papers of W. Somerset Maugham, (Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge) "puts us over that bit of red carpet into the very big time as a repository," says director Howard Gotlieb. Over the past few months Special Collections has also obtained the archives of historian Cecil Woodham-Smith, Oscar-winning actors Jose Ferrer and Robert Donat, and cartoonist Paul Szep, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. They join the personal papers of more than 1,700 public figures in Gotlieb's department, which contains large holdings of such notables as Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franz Liszt, Robert Frost, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, and Ella Fitzgerald. Special Collections has millions of documents, providing an abundance of material for researchers and journalists. The general public can also view selected holdings through an exhibition program: current displays include John Quincy Adams, Bette Davis, Arthur Fiedler, and Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS'55). "The Martin Luther King Papers, which contain 83,000 documents, draws four or five scholars a week," says Gotlieb. "What we have here provides people with direct access to the raw materials of history. A person's papers are his or her most private possessions."

William Somerset Maugham ( Some quotations: To the lover waiting for his love, no sound is sadder than the tardy striking of the hours. It is but seldom that a man loves one and for all; it may only show that his sexual instincts are not very strong. Human sorrow is like a child born in the night who sees the sun rise and thinks that yesterday never existed. The writer must be playful and serious at the same time. When you are in love what use it is to you if all you get in return is kindness, friendship, affection ? It is Dead Sea fruit that sticks in your throat. People will sometimes forgive you the good you have done them, but seldom the harm they have done you. Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with it. People ask for criticism, but they only want praise. The unfortunate thing about this world is that the good habits are much easier to give up than the bad ones. Art for art’s sake makes no more sense than gin for gin’s sake. There are two good things in life – freedom of thought and freedom of action.
