W(illiam). Somerset Maugham
British agent in World War I
Brtish writer Sommerset Maugham , who admired the honesty of the working people but who sought the luxury of the rich, served as a spy for England during World War I, and a reluctant one, at that. Planning to become a physician, Maugham worked as an intern while reading onmnivorously. He kept a "writer's notebook," about what he termed "life in the raw," particularly in the slums of Lambeth where he worked briefly as an obstetric clerk.
That career was abandoned when, in 1897, Maugham published a very successful novel. Liza of Lambeth , a book he wrote more for his own amusement than with any thoughts of enriching himself. It accurately and sympathetically portrayed "the low life" of Lambeth, drawn from his own experiences, and was, as the French term it, a success de scandal . Riches flowed from this work, so much so that Maugham decided on a full-time writing career. He did not write successful novels but well-received plays and also short stories. In 1915, Maugham published what was later heralded as his masterpiece (and would eventually sell more than 10 million copies

He smiled and took her hand and pressed it. They got up and walked out of the gallery. They stood for a moment at the balustrade and looked at Trafalgar Square. Cabs and omnibuses hurried to and fro, and crowds passed, hastening in every direction, and the sun was shining.

The day broke gray and dull. The clouds hung heavily, and there was a rawness in the air that suggested snow. A woman servant came into a room in which a child was sleeping and drew the curtains. She glanced mechanically at the house opposite, a stucco house with a portico, and went to the child's bed.

...the fundamental aspect of the novel is its story-telling aspect...
EM Forster , Aspects of the Novel I liked this collected series of lectures on what makes for good novel writing much better than almost any of the novels that Forster actually wrote ( A Passage to India [see Review ] being the lone exception). Forster treats seven different aspectsthe story, people, plot, fantasy, prophecy, pattern, and rhythmin a breezy conversational style. Along the way, he offers examples, both good and bad, from literary history. I found myself agreeing and dissenting about equally, but the whole thing was immensely interesting and entertaining. Here are some of the observations that I agreed with and why: A story "can only have one fault: that of making the audience not want to know what happens
    next."
