Maturoval v Rouenu. V naturalistických povídkách a románech vylíèil smyslu zbavený, pudùm propadlý svìt. Opovrhoval mondénní spoleèností, zároveò jej v¹ak pøitahovala. Kritizoval kolonialismus a prodejnost ¾urnalistiky.

Ecrivain pessimiste, il sait trŠs bien rendre les hantises et les cauchemars de la vie int‚rieure Maupassant spends his early year at the sea-side, in Normandy, France, amidst fishermen's kids, dreaming of the beautiful sailing yachts of the Bay of Fecamp, a picture that will follow him all his life. His family life was extreme, cherished by his immoderate and neuropath mother and despising his characterless father. Maupassant was a handsome man, loving women immoderatedly, which caused him to catch syphilis. At the end of his life, Maupassant, was abusing of drugs, trying to overcome unsuccessfully his fatal illness. The nightmares and distresses, caused by these medicines, are reflected in his masterpiece, Le Horla (The Horla, 1887) This Author's titles If you wish further information about this author, please enter French Authors: The Song Of Roland Balzac Dumas Hugo ...

Le Horla is one of his masterpieces Arthur Symons said of Maupassant: "His appeal is genuine, and his skill, of its kind, incontestable. He attracts, as certain men do, by a warm and blunt plausibility. He is so frank, and seems so broad; and is so skilful, and seems so living. All the exterior heat of life is in his work; and this exterior heat gives a more immediate illusion of what we call real life than the profound inner vitality of, let us say, Hawthorne."

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893)
Commentary by Karen Bernardo
The French writer Guy de Maupassant grew up in a home dominated by his artistic and ambitious mother; the father dropped into the background early on, and played only a miniscule role in the young boy's development.
Fortunately, de Maupassant while still young came under the influence of the older writer Flaubert, who encouraged his protegee's literary aspirations. Guy seems to have regarded Flaubert as a much preferable father to his own, and no wonder; Gustave de Maupassant was neither a good father nor a good husband, and doesn't seem to have been much of a man. Gustave's weak, spoiled, and hedonistic ways were in many ways shared by Guy himself; yet his writings testify to his lifelong belief that men were scum, women saints, and if a woman cheated on her man it was only because he was weak and worthless and unable to give her the love and support a woman needs. This clearly was a reflection of the situation he saw at home as he grew up.
Lest one assume that de Maupassant was some sort of proto-feminist, let us put that idea to rest. De Maupassant loved women passionately, but his interest in them was scarcely idealistic. He enjoyed visiting brothels, and his easy familiarity with prostitutes is reflected in stories such as "Boule de Suif" "Ball of Fat," a quasi-endearing nickname for a voluptuous whore. He recognized how people can be brought down by vanity, a situation depicted in his famous story "The Necklace." And he was fascinated with humanity's darker side, as we learn from his masterful character study of an effeminate military officer in "Mademoiselle Fifi." His lifestyle, however, was to prove de Maupassant's undoing; he died insane and far too young from complications brought on by syphilis.

(Francia, 1850—1893)

http://home.swipnet.se/tonny/lastbok19.htm

E VER since he entered France with the invading army Walter Schnaffs had considered himself the most unfortunate of men. He was large, had difficulty in walking, was short of breath and suffered frightfully with his feet, which were very flat and very fat. But he was a peaceful, benevolent man, not warlike or sanguinary, the father of four children whom he adored, and married to a little blonde whose little tendernesses, attentions and kisses he recalled with despair every evening. He liked to rise late and retire early, to eat good things in a leisurely manner and to drink beer in the saloon. He reflected, besides, that all that is sweet in existence vanishes with life, and he maintained in his heart a fearful hatred, instinctive as well as logical, for cannon, rifles, revolvers and swords, but especially for bayonets, feeling that he was unable to dodge this dangerous weapon rapidly enough to protect his big paunch.
