Preface THE lectures included in this volume were prepared at the request of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and were delivered in the early part of 1912, under its auspices. They were suggested by the tercentenary of the King James version of the Bible. The plan adopted led to a restatement of the history which prepared for the version, and of that which produced it. It was natural next to point out its principal characteristics as a piece of literature. Two lectures followed, noting its influence on literature and on history. The course closed with a statement and argument regarding the place of the Bible in the life of to-day. The reception accorded the lectures at the time of their public delivery, and the discussion which ensued upon some of the points raised, encourage the hope that they may be more widely useful. It is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Hooper, director of the Institute, whatever credit the work may merit. Certainly it would not have been undertaken without his kindly urgency. Cloud The King James Bible translators had good reason for every reading they included in their translation, and some of those readings are based more on ancient versions than on Greek or Hebrew texts. This, though, does not add up to advanced revelation. I believe the KJV translators were God-guided, but the KJV readings were not pulled out of thin air. The readings were all based upon textual witness from centuries past. Consider the following testimony about that part of our Authorized English Bible that is expressed in italics: "These are English words which are put in because it seems impossible to express the meaning originally intended without certain additions which the reader must take into account in his understanding of the version. ... the italicized words of the King James Version are a frank effort to be accurate and yet fair" (Cleland Boyd McAfee, The Greatest English Classic , 1912, p. 75).

Cloud The following is an excerpt from Chapter Two of the book For Love of the Bible: The Battle for the King James Version and the Received Text from 1800 to Present We are convinced that it is impossible to understand the issue of Bible texts and versions apart from a correct understanding of these matters. In the following chapters we will attempt to highlight the social and theological influences of the last two centuries which have played a key role in the development of the modern versions. By the early 1800s the King James Bible had ruled supreme in the English- speaking world for 200 years. It's predecessors, going back to the 1526 Tyndale Version, were the same basic Bibles. They were based upon the same Greek text and employed the same type of translation methodology. They were formal equivalencies, meaning the translators labored to carry the precise words and phrasings of the underlying Greek and Hebrew texts into the receptor language. Those who used the King James Bible in the early nineteenth century were using a Bible with 300 years of antiquity in English. The underlying Greek text had been accepted by Bible-believing Christians of the sixteenth century as the authentic representation of the Apostolic writings. Thus they called it the Received Text. In their estimation, this text had been faithfully transmitted through the centuries. This carries the antiquity of the King James Bible back, we believe, to the Apostles.
