Original cost: Nellie Letitia (Mooney) McClung was born at Chatsworth, Ontario on October 20, 1873, the youngest of six children of an Irish immigrant family. When Nellie was six years old, the Mooneys moved to a homestead near Wawanesa, Manitoba. Although she was ten when she started school, Nellie earned a teaching certificate by the time she was sixteen. When she married a druggist named Robert Wesley McClung in 1896, she gave up her teaching career. While living in Manitou, Manitoba Nellie became active in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a group that believed the abuse of alcohol caused unemployment, disease, poverty and immorality. In addition to campaigning to prohibit alcohol, the WCTU promoted the idea that women should be permitted to vote. McClung published her first novel

28. Women's Suffrage Movement
Woman's Suffrage and Abolition Movement by L. Blankenship http Nellie McClung 'OurNell', (4) Nellie Letitia McClung 18731951, (5) Nellie McClung, (6) Nellie
http://eduscapes.com/42explore/suffrage.htm
The Topic:
Women's Suffrage Movement Easier - Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote. The women's suffrage movement was the struggle to gain the same right to vote as men. Harder - With a few exceptions, women today have the same voting rights as men. However, this was not always the case. During US colonial times, voting was limited to adult males who owned property. Many people thought that property owners had the strongest interest in good government; therefore, they were the best qualified to make decisions. In the early nineteenth century, changing social conditions and the idea of equality led to the beginning of the woman suffrage movement. By then, more women were receiving education. Women also began to participate in reform movements and take increased interest in politics. Women and men began to question why women were not also allowed to vote. Supporters of this drive were called suffragists.

For the convenience of others who may wish to link to them, the Celebration maintains the following listing of its local on-line texts, organized by author. A listing of "Local Editions by Category" is also available.

DUTTON & CO./ [191-?]. Half-title. Anne Bowman was an English writer. According to her listing in Allibone Supp she was most prolific and chiefly wrote boys' adventure stories. The young exiles is set chiefly in Russia and Siberia as a freedom-loving Russian family of the nobility flees from persecution by the Emperor. They cross from Siberia into America and with the help of friendly Indians and fur-trading factors, they make their way across Canada and eventually to England. Although the three young people in the story are not the chief protagonists, the Preface makes it clear that the book was intended for the young. In the Preface also the author remarks on Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson. Indeed this work has elements of these survival stories as well as their strong Christian component. 520 DWIGHT, Mary Lane.

Douglas was an American writer chiefly noted for her 'Kathie' series and for her 'Little girl' series published in 10 volumes from 1897 to 1909. (Allibone Supp). A little girl in old Quebec is her only book with a Canadian setting. It is a highly romantic tale of Quebec City in the days of Champlain. The history is combined with the unusual story of a fey child who finally succumbs to love and marriage. There are interesting comments on the lot of women (both native and non-native), and religion. 470 DUNCAN, Norman, 1871-1916. Catt, Carrie Chapman (1859-1947) Carrie Catt was an American leader in the campaign for woman suffrage. She served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1900 to 1904, and from 1915 to 1920, when Amendment 19 to the United States Constitution was passed, giving women the right to vote. Catt began her suffrage work as an organizer of clubs in 1887. She became one of the suffrage movement's most effective lecturers and organizers. Her work extended to Canada and Europe. From 1904 to 1923, she served as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. In 1920, Catt founded the National League of Women Voters (now called the League of Women Voters) to teach women an understanding of public affairs so they could vote intelligently. In 1925, she founded the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War. This became the Women's Action Committee for Victory and a Lasting Peace. Carrie Clinton Lane was born in Ripon, Wis., and attended Iowa State College. She taught school and became the first woman superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa.

Thomas B. Macaulay (British author, 1800-1858) To punish a man because he has committed a crime, or because he is believed, though unjustly, to have committed a crime, is not persecution. To punish a man, because we infer from the nature of some doctrine which he holds, or from the conduct of other persons who hold the same doctrines with him, that he will commit a crime, is persecution, and is, in every case, foolish and wicked. Samora Machel (Mozambiquen activist and politician, 1933-1986) Unity and victory are synonymous.
