A Cloud Of Witnesses... The Power of the Gospel By Philip Melanchthon Those whom conscience has terrified in this manner [by convicting of sin] would most surely be driven to despair, the usual condition of the condemned, if they were not lifted up and encouraged by the promise of the grace and mercy of God, commonly called the gospel. If the afflicted conscience believes the promise of grace in Christ, it is resuscitated and quickened by faith, as the following examples will reveal wonderfully. On the other hand, the advent of Christ is described by the prophet Zechariah as follows in 9:9: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble." First, when the prophet gives the order to rejoice, he teaches that the word of this King is different from the law; moreover, he expresses the gladness in the conscience of one overjoyed at hearing the word of grace. Next, there is nothing tumultuous, but all is calm, that you may understand he is the author of peace, not of wrath. This is that characteristic which elicits Zechariah's term "humble," which the Evangelist, as if in explanation, has made "meek." Isaiah has the same idea in 42:3: "bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench." Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560) was one of the most important first-generation German Reformers.

This symbol was chosen because Matthew gives the genealogy of Jesus, often speaks of him as the Son of Man, and includes discussion of the Kingdom of Heaven. Mark : To the left is Mark's symbol, the Winged Lion. Mark's gospel begins with a voice crying in the wilderness (1:3). Luke : To the right is the Winged Ox, Luke's symbol. Oxen were sacrificed in great numbers to Jehovah (I Kings 8:63). The gospel of Luke speaks often of sacrifice. John : While the other three gospels begin with Jesus as a human being who is later recognized as the "Son of God," John begins his story of the life of Jesus with an echo of Genesis, "In the beginning." In this gospel, Jesus comes down from heaven and lives with his people. John's symbol is the Eagle. Transfiguration : The center panel of this great window shows the transfiguration of Jesus. To the right is Moses, the Lawgiver, to the left is Elijah, the prophet. These biblical figures are included to illustrate the fulfillment of the Old Testament law and prophesy. Below Jesus is John, the beloved disciple, James who later was a martyr and Peter the rock-solid man. These are the inner-circle of Jesus' disciples.

He served as mediator between Luther and the humanists, tempering the Protestant disapproval of worldly culture. He represented Luther at many conferences. At the Marburg Conference he opposed Huldreich Zwingli , and at the Diet of Augsburg (1530) he wrote and presented the Augsburg Confession (see creed ). Melanchthon was more conciliatory than Luther, as evidenced by his friendship with John Calvin after Luther's death and by his willingness to compromise on doctrinal issues. John Rogers Rogers, John (b. c. 1500, Aston, Staffordshire, Eng. d. Feb. 4, 1555. Smithfield, London), religious Reformer and the first Protestant martyr of the English queen Mary I's reign. He was the editor of the English Bible published (1537) under the pseudonym Thomas Matthew. A graduate of Cambridge (1526). he was made rector of Holy Trinity, Queenhithe London, c. 1532 and two years later became a chaplain to English merchants at Antwerp. There the English scholar William Tyndale influenced him to forsake Roman Catholicism for Protestantism. After Tyndale was betrayed and executed in 1536, Rogers combined Tyndale's translation of the Old Testament, which was complete through II Chronicles, with the remaining books from the translation by another English scholar, Miles Coverdale, and added Tyndale's New Testament (1526). This version of the complete Bible, which also included Coverdale's translation of the Apocrypha , was first printed in Antwerp in 1537 by one Thomas Matthew; this pseudonym probably was intended to protect Rogers from meeting Tyndale's fate, and the Rogers edition was shortly thereafter sold in England. Although Rogers had little to do with the actual translation, he supplied notes and valuable prefaces that constitute the first English commentary on the Bible. His work formed the basis of the Great Bible (1539), from which the Bishops's Bible (1568) and the Authorized or King James, Version (1611) came. He returned to England in 1548 from Germany where he had served a Protestant congregation in
