"So many young men got their likes and dislikes from Mencken" Ernest Hemingway, The Sun also Rises
A Mencken Biography Henry Louis Mencken, born September 12, 1880 in the only city to be his home, Baltimore, Maryland, remains one of this century's most imposing intellectual figures. His early years were consumed with books, altough he abandoned such heavy study in favor of "life itself" in his teens. In 1899, at the age of nineteen, he began work at the Baltimore Herald first as a city reporter, a task which he reflected fondly upon for its opportunities to see Baltimore at ground level. Eventually, the Herald made him a daily columnist in order to allow him a chance to vent. His rapier like wit, and unrelenting observant journalist's eye made him a rising star, and at the age of 23 he became an Editor-at-Large (or City Editor, depending on which version of the facts you wish to believe, but perhaps its a distinction lacking a difference.) His first book appeared in 1905, a critique of the plays of George Bernard Shaw. It remains utterly important to remember that Mencken, despite his most common modern use as a social critic pursued a vastness of interests, including literature and music. To call him a renaissance man may be a cliche overstatement, but it is appropriate to highlight his diverse interests. To be fair, Nietzshce and Shaw share a simillar vein and consistency of scholarship, to which Mencken may perhaps be considered as an American (and perhaps to his chagrin

Life and Times Daily Quotation "It is now quite lawful for a Catholic woman to avoid pregnancy by a resort to mathematics, though she is still forbidden to resort to physics and chemistry." Mencken, H(enry) L(ouis) (1880-1956), American journalist, critic, and essayist, whose perceptive and often controversial analyses of American life and letters made him one of the most influential critics of the 1920s and 1930s. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. The shortcomings of democracy and middle-class American culture were the targets of Mencken's wit and criticism. A six-volume collection of his essays and reviews, entitled Prejudices, was published between 1919 and 1927. Mencken's most important piece of scholarship was The American Language (1919), which traced the development and established the importance of American English. Encarta Encyclopedia

Quotes From H. L. Mencken Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public. Freedom of press is limited to those who own one.
Those who can do. Those who can't teach.
Imagine the Creator as a low comedian, and at once the world becomes explicable.
Nature abhors a moron.
Say what you will about the Ten Commandments, you must always come back to the pleasant fact that there are only ten of them.
Marriage is a wonderful institution, but who would want to live in an institution.
Theology is the effort to explain the unknowable in terms of the not worth knowing.
Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.
Hanging one scoundrel, it appears, does not deter the next. Well, what of it? The first one is at least disposed of.
Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings is justice.
It is hard to believe that a man is telling the truth when you know that you would lie if you were in his place. Capitalism undoubtedly has certain boils and blotches upon it, but has it as many as government? Has it as many as marriage? Has it as many as religion? I doubt it. It is the only basic institution of modern man that shows any genuine health and vigor.

Where do I start?
A recent query of the Enoch Pratt Library’s catalog with the search word “Mencken” got 262 hits, showing that the Menckenophile can spend a good portion of his life reading works by and about the Sage. The list presented here is greatly reduced in scale. The emphasis is on books in print, with a few out-of-print titles included because of their merit. The out-of-print works should be available in any library worthy of the name. A good start would be The Vintage Mencken , compiled by Alistair Cooke. The book’s forty-nine selections give a wide sampling of Mencken’s work, ranging from excerpts from the nostalgic Days books to examples of Mencken’s literary criticism, political essays, reporting, commentary and more. It includes the essays one would count as the “Best of Mencken”. The reader who finds The Vintage Mencken agreeable is ready to move on to the Chrestomathy , HLM’s own selection from his writings of "material that continues to be of more or less current interest". This work contains 240 selections and includes several pieces, such as "A Neglected Anniversary" (‘The bathtub Hoaxrsquo;), for which Mencken is famous. Mencken’s writings still retain the power to offend modern sensibilities. The thick skinned may want to move on to

-H.L. Mencken Epitaph The Smart Set , December 1921) There seems, even at this late date, some remote possibility that the revival of conservative thought in America may actually suffice to rescue the original reputation of H.L. Mencken, as a funny and profound critic of democracy, and save him from being remembered as only a cranky (perhaps even racist and anti-Semitic) columnist and the author of a decent early book on linguistics. This is not to diminish in any way the enduring value of The American Language ; it remains eminently readable and retains its significance as an important defense of the distinctiveness and even the superiority of American English to British English. At the time he wrote, Mr. Mencken's assertion may have seemed audacious, but who now would argue with his conclusion that : When two-thirds of the people who use a certain language decide to call it a freight train instead of a goods train, they are 'right';

Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was a compound of brilliance, wit, grit, gumption, and humor who became one of the great writers and social critics of this fading century. His agnostic father quietly agreed with his Lutheran mother to send the young lad to Sunday school as long as he chose. He quit somewhere between Genesis and Exodus when he "got a firm conviction that the Christian faith was full of palpable absurdities, and the Christian God preposterous." He gave the experience a definition: " Sunday school: A prison in which children do penance for the evil conscience of their parents." Yet he became a responsible recognized biblical scholar. He would author 28 books, found two magazines and astound the nation with the punch of his sardonic wit as a Baltimore Sun columnist. He challenged his readers to think and speak out. "The most curious social convention of the great age in which we live is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected,"
