Henry Louis Mencken (1880–1956) was a leading defender of liberty in 20th-century America. He challenged restrictions on freedom of the press, denounced President Woodrow Wilson for entering World War I, and criticized Franklin Delano Roosevelt's lust for political power. Terry Teachout, music critic for Commentary and a contributor to Time , has written a biography of Mencken that explores his contributions to liberty without ignoring his blemishes. Teachout will be joined by columnist P. J. O'Rourke, H. L. Mencken research fellow at the Cato Institute, to discuss this important new book. Send this page to a friend

Despite their value, relatively few of his literary reviews have been reprinted in any form. A remedy has arrived in the form of H. L. Mencken on American Literature , edited by S. T. Joshi, published by Ohio University Press on June 17, 2002.
Baltimore Herald and the Baltimore Evening Sun . In 1908 he was appointed book reviewer for the Smart Set , continuing in that role until 1923, when he transferred his literary criticism to the American Mercury . In fifteen years at the first magazine and in ten years at the second, Mencken offered magisterial judgments on a staggering number and variety of books.
Scrupulously edited and annotated, H. L. Mencken on American Literature shows a great critic at work and reveals the worth and duty of that pursuit. It will interest general readers as well as scholars and students who are seeking criticism that has remained fresh, lively, and insightful. As a bonus, after all these years Mencken can still make readers laugh out loud.

" For e ve r y complex problem there is an a ns w e r that is clear, simple, and wrong." ~ H. L. Mencken Outspoken journalist Henry Louis Mencken (1880–1956), the "Bard of Baltimore," wrote satire and astute social commentary at a time when his words needed to be expressed. "I do not believe in democracy," Mencken declared, " but I am perfectly willing to admit that it provides the only really amusing form of government ever endured by mankind." From 1910-1940, the prolific Mencken was considered by many to be an important literary figure in the United States. Savagely witty and honest , he poked fun at popular beliefs and stirred up controversy with his criticism of Franklin D. Roosevelt and New Deal politics. He wrote for the Baltimore Sun , co-founded and edited the American Mercury , and brilliantly reported on Clarence Darrow 's famous Scopes Monkey Trial "Conscience," he observed. "The inner voice which warns us that someone may be looking."

Quote from H. L. Mencken "There is, in fact, no reason to believe that any given natural phenomenon, however marvelous it may seem today, will remain forever inexplicable. Soon or late the laws governing the production of life itself will be discovered in the laboratory, and man may set up business as a creator on his own account. The thing, indeed, is not only conceivable; it is even highly probable."
