The Red House Mystery
Author Info: A.A. Milne
[Alan Alexander]
Of course it's very hampering being a detective, when you don't know anything about detecting,
and when nobody knows that you're doing detection, and you can't have people up to
cross-examine them, and you have neither the energy nor the means to make proper inquiries; and,
in short, when you're doing the whole thing in a thoroughly amateur, haphazard way.
A.A. Milne (The Red House Mystery) A.A. Milne is, of course, best remembered for his series of Winnie the Pooh tales. In addition, he wrote for the famous British humor magazine Punch, was a fine playwright and, though he served in WWI, became an outspoken pacifist. In the midst of all this, he wrote one of the classic English drawing room mysteries The Red House Mystery . The book ends on a note which seems to imply that further adventures will follow, but sadly none did. The Red House is a British manor, home to Mark Ablett, and gathering place for his fun loving friends. But the bucolic setting is disrupted when Ablett's long lost brother, black sheep of the family, is murdered and Mark goes missing. Two guests, Antony Gillingham, a sort of Holmsian jack of all trades, and Bill Beverley, a mildly dense Watson-like sidekick, take it upon themselves to solve the crime. What follows is a reasonably dated but still amusing "intuitive" mystery. Raymond Chandler apparently went out of his way to attack the story as one of the worst examples of the genre, wholly lacking in genuine criminological methodology and requiring enormous intuitive leaps on the part of the "detectives". Still, take it for what it is and it offers a pleasant enough reading experience.

Alan Alexander Milne
Short biography
Milne, Alan Alexander (1882-1956), English author of a series of children's books that have become classics. Milne, who was born in London, was the author of several whimsical plays popular in the 1920s, including Mr. Pim Passes By (1919) and The Dover Road (1920), as well as a few novels of contemporary life and one detective story, The Red House Mystery (1922). He is best known, however, for the juvenile verses and stories he wrote for his son, Christopher Robin (1920- ). These delightful books include When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927), and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Not only Christopher Robin himself, with his stuffed bear Winnie-the-Pooh and their constant companion Piglet, but also Kanga and Roo, Eeyore the donkey, the kittenish Tigger, Rabbit, and Owl—all the fanciful characters created by Milne—are beloved by both children and adults.
Extensive biography
Alan Alexander Milne was born January 18, 1882, the youngest of three sons to Sarah Marie and John Vine Milne. His father ran a school for young boys, Henley House, in which Alan, and his older brothers, David Barrett Milne (Barry) and Kenneth John Milne (Ken) grew up in. John Vine Milne was the eldest son of a Congressional minister and had served in many odd jobs before settling on teaching. He had been a clerk in the counting-house of a biscuit factory, apprenticed in an engineering firm, and was an usher in various schools before he finally earned his B.A. and became a school teacher. He married Sarah Maria Heginbotham on August 27, 1878. Alan was always close to his father, and more so to his brother Ken. en would remain Alan's closest friend up until his death in 1929.

January 18 ~  Here Today Pooh's Library "After all, what a r e birthdays ? Here today and g o n e tomorrow." ~ A. A. Milne Writer Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) was born on this day in London, England and was the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, the most famous bear in the world. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh (1928), the charming tales of Pooh bear and his friends, Tigger (the original "Yahoo"), Piglet (a forever friend), Rabbit (always rushing) and Eeyore (delightful Mr. Negative). Milne's words about life in the 100-acre woods, written for his son Christopher Robin, were brought to life by the line drawings of Ernest H. Shepard. Pooh is more popular today than ever before. Children ... and their parents... continue to be touched by the timeless wisdom and of the rich stories. The secret may be that as Milne wrote for his son, the tales revitalized his own boyhood memories and gave voice to the child in everyone. "A children's book," he explained, "must be written, not for children , but for the author himself."

33. A.A. Milne
AA Milne 18821956 The man whose fame now rests on a Bear of Very Little Brain was actually something of a literary man-about-town in postwar London.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/railway/age/milne_bio.html
The man whose fame now rests on a "Bear of Very Little Brain" was actually something of a literary man-about-town in postwar London. In 1919 A.A. Milne's play, Mr. Pim Passes By, was staged to great acclaim, redeeming the disastrous publication of his first novel 14 years earlier and solidifying his contemporary reputation. A pacifist who fought in France during World War I (and who published Peace with Honour, a denunciation of war, in 1934), Milne was characterized by contradiction in his literary output as well. His worldly plays and novels, which were encouraged by his teacher and friend H.G. Wells, met with success in their day, but their names register now not at all in relation to the name of the stout golden bear with the "hunny" pot who was inspired not by a great thinker like Wells but rather by a collection of stuffed animals in the nursery of Milne's son. Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared publicly in 1924, with Milne's publication of When We Were Very Young, a collection of children's verse that had already appeared in Punch

~*~Alan Alexander Milne~*~ by Patricia Alan Alexander Milne was born in Hampstead, London, on January 18th, 1882 to John Vine and Sarah Maria Milne. His two older brothers were Ken and Barry. Alan was the youngest. Both his parents were school teachers, which was good for his academics as he enrolled in Henley House school in September, 1888. In 1893 he won a scholarship to Westminster where he joined his brother Ken. He then went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1900. Whiled there he started writing when he became editor of "Granta," a magazine. Following that position, at age 24, he worked as editor assistant for the popular magazine "Punch." With an affirmative response from Daphne De Selincourt, Alan was wed, on June 24, 1913. However his happy love life, and wonderful job, had to stop with the start of World War I. He was sent to France in the Warwickshire Regiment. He was sent home after developing trench fever. Having his career cut right in the middle, he made a great recovery from the war and continued contributing to "Punch," and started writing plays. A popular debut came with "Mr. Pim Passes By." In August the birth of Alan's and Daphne's first and only son resulted in a move to Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, East Sussex, which is on the outskirts of Ashdown Forest. Alan continued writing, and wrote many famous books.
