English writer, the creator of Winner-the-Pooh. Milne wrote many different kinds of books including humorous verses and light comedies as a staff member of Punch and the detective novel THE RED HOUSE MYSTERY, which was severely criticized by Raymond Chandler. But Milne's most popular works are WINNIE-THE-POOH (1926) and THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER (1928). "On Wednesday, when the sky is blue,
And I have nothing else to do,
I sometimes wonder if it's true That who is what and what is who."
(from Winnie-the-Pooh) A.A. Milne was born in London. His father owned a private school at Mortiner Road, the Henley House, an institution that for a short time included among its teachers the science fiction writer H.G. Wells. Milne studied mathematics at the Trinity College in Cambridge, and edited the undergraduate magazine Granta . After receiving his B.A. in 1903, he started his career as a freelance writer. Milne's essays and poems were published in the satirical magazine

Separating two world wars, the 1920's followed events such as the sinking of the Titanic (1912), the invention of stainless steel (1913), and the completion of the Panama Canal (1914). The Roaring Twenties would have their own share of excitement and wonder as well - the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, penicillin was discovered, and the Sultan of Swat hit 60 home runs. These events were and still are significant, but they reflect only a small portion of the full story.

The Complete Poems Of Winnie-the-Pooh Hardcover "'Let's frighten the dragons,' I said to Pooh.
'That's right,' said Pooh to Me.
'I'm not afraid,' I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted, 'Shoo!
Silly old dragons!' - and off they flew" says Christopher Robin in A.A. Milne's well-loved poem "Us Two". Milne (1882-1956) didn't start writing for children until 1920, when his son, the real Christopher Robin, was a year old. That's about when his wife Daphne envisioned her son's stuffed Harrods bear, tiger, pig, kangaroo, and donkey as characters in a children's book, and the rest is history! By 1924, Milne had published "When We Were Very Young", a whimsical collection of verses illustrated in gentle watercolors by Ernest H. Shepard; "Now We Are Six", a second collection, followed in 1927. This hefty, full-color volume brings together all of Milne's verses, unabridged. If you fondly remember James James

Who Was Alan Alexander Milne? A.A. Milne, Christopher Robin Milne and Winnie-the-Pooh (Howard Coster, 1926). A.A. Milne was much more than a children's author. The American Heritage Dictionary (1971 edition) describes him thus: " Milne...A(lan) A(lexander) , 1882-1956. English author of children's books, novels, plays and poems." Yet even this statement hardly summarizes the man or even the writer, for A.A. Milne won considerable fame and fortune long before he started writing the first of the "Pooh Books", the book of poems called When We Were Very Young
Alan Alexander Milne (b. January 18, 1882) was the son of John Vine (J.V.) Milne, a dedicated and talented schoolmaster, and Maria Milne, herself a highly competent and talented woman and dedicated Victorian mother. Alan had two brothers, David Barrett (the oldest, generally called Barry) and Kenneth John (Ken). Alan was the youngest (and most precocious) of the three. As he said of himself years later, "In Papa's house it was natural to be interested; it was easy to be clever." Later, Alan would attend classes in the school administered by his father, and be taught there by none other than H.G. Wells (who later wrote The War of the Worlds , among many other works).

Happy Winnie-the-Pooh Day
According to my James V. Brown Library calendar, January 18th was Winnie the Pooh Day honoring A. A. Milne, author, born 1882. A smile comes to my face as I remember a pop-up book that my brother had when we were young depicting the roly-poly bear and all of his friends in 3-D. Everyone is familiar with the inhabitants of 100-Acre Wood, either from reading the whimsical books written by Alan Alexander Milne and illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard or from the song-filled Disney movies. Most everyone has a favorite character, whether it is the cuddly Pooh, the erratic Rabbit, the innocent Piglet, the pompous Owl, the morose Eeyore, the motherly Kanga, the playful Roo or the bouncy Tigger. But probably only the most devoted fan knows the story behind the stories. A.A. Milne (1882-1956) grew up in England and although he held a B.A. in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge he pursued a very productive writing career. Beginning with humorist essays for the well-known Punch magazine and progressing to satirical plays for the British theater plus many novels and books of verses, Milne’s reputation was well established by the time he wrote the first Winnie-the-Pooh book for his young son, Christopher Robin. The story is about Christopher Robin’s favorite toy, a teddy bear, several of his other stuffed animals and some of the inhabitants of the forest that was near the Milne’s farm in Sussex.

FROM A FULL HEART I N days of peace my fellow-men
Rightly regarded me as more like
A Bishop than a Major-Gen.,
And nothing since has made me warlike;
But when this agelong struggle ends
And I have seen the Allies dish up
The goose of Hindenburgoh, friends!
I shall out-bish the mildest Bishop. When the War is over and the Kaiser's out of print,
I'm going to buy some tortoises and watch the beggars sprint;
When the War is over and the sword at last we sheathe,
I'm going to keep a jelly-fish and listen to it breathe.
I never really longed for gore, And any taste for red corpuscles That lingered with me left before The German troops had entered Brussels. In early days the Colonel's "Shun!" Froze me; and, as the War grew older, The noise of someone else's gun Left me considerably colder. When the War is over and the battle has been won, I'm going to buy a barnacle and take it for a run; When the War is over and the German Fleet we sink
