Pooh's 75th birthday NPR Broadcast with Peter Dennis Biography of Alan Alexander Milne Scots by birth, Alan Milne spent his childhood in London, where his father was a preparatory schoolmaster. His early education owed much to the skills of a young teacher and mentor H.G. Wells years later, Milne described Wells as "a great writer and a great friend." He continued his education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He bequethed his original handwritten manuscripts of Winnie-the-Pooh and The House At Pooh Corner to the College Library. While an undergraduate at Cambridge he edited Granta for a year his first literary efforts were published in the humourous magazine Punch, where a month after his twenty-fourth birthday he started work as Assistant Editor, remaining there until the outbreak of the First World War.

Alan Alexander Milne A.A. Milne was born in London, England, in 1882. Though he studied maths at Trinity College at Cambridge University, he wanted to be a writer. He began his writing career there, being published in the school's magazine, The Granta , of which he later became the editor. From there, he went on to be assistant editor of Punch magazine. He married Dorothy "Daphne" de Selincourt in 1913, and they became the parents of Christopher Robin Milne in 1920. It was Daphne that suggested to her husband that he write children's stories about their son's toy animals. Christopher Robin's original toys, now living in the New York Public Library
When We Were Very Young in which Winnie-the-Pooh made his first appearance, was published in 1924. Winnie-the-Pooh followed, in 1926. In 1927, Now We Are Six was published, and then the last of the Pooh books, The House At Pooh Corner , came in 1928. Milne was the author of many literary works, including quite a number of successful plays. But it was his immensely popular children's stories that he would be known for, a fact that he never quite understood: "If a writer, why not write

    ALAN ALEXANDER MILNE
    English author (1882-1956)
    Biography:
Alan Alexander Milne was born in 1882 in Scotland. He soon moved to England, where his father used to work as schoolmaster. He was taught by H.G.Wells , among other teachers. After he had finished his schooling, he began his carreer as a writer in London and in 1918 he published his first book, When We Were Very Young . In 1920 his son, Christopher Robin, was born and Alan decided to write a story about Christopher Robin's nursery toys, entitled Winnie-the-Pooh . Later on, The House at Pooh Corner , which was to be the last of the series, became a best-seller.
    On the Internet:
Since Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared, this bear and tiger have become favourites among children from all around the world. Thus there are many sites about these characters. Ricochet suggests http://www.pooh-corner.com for Milne's biography and http://www.just-pooh.com for pictures and other references, but other hundred sites are available.
