B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback John Milton (1608-1674) One of the greatest poets of the English language, best-known for his epic poem PARADISE LOST (1667). Milton's powerful, rhetoric prose and the eloquence of his poetry had an immense influence especially on the 18th-century verse. Besides poems, Milton published pamphlets defending civil and religious rights. "Of Man's first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste
Brought death into the world, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden."

(from Paradise Lost John Milton was born in London. His mother Sarah Jeffrey was the daughter of a merchant sailor, and his father had risen to prosperity as a scrivener or law writer - he also composed music. The family was wealthy enough to afford a second house in the country. Milton was educated at St Paul's School and then at Christ's College, Cambridge (1625-32), where he was called, half in scorn, "The Lady of Christ's." During his Cambridge period, while considering himself destined for the ministry, he began to write poetry in Latin, Italian, and English. He was expelled for a term after starting a fist fight with his tutor. On leaving Cambridge Milton had given up his original plan to become a priest. He adopted no profession but spent six years at leisure in his father's home, writing during that time L'ALLEGRO, IL PENSEROSO (1632), COMUS (1634), and LYCIDAS (1637). In 1635 the Miltons moved to Horton, Buckinghamshire, where John pursued his studies in Greek, Latin, and Italian. He traveled in France and Italy in the late 1630s, meeting in Paris the jurist and theologian Hugo Grotius and the astronomer Galileo Galilei in Florence - there are references to Galileo's telescope in

Find out some uncouth cell, Where brooding Darkness spreads his jealous wings, And the night-raven sings; There, under ebon shades and low-browed rocks, 10 As ragged as thy locks, In dark Cimmerian desert ever dwell. But come, thou Goddess fair and free, In heaven yclept Euphrosyne, And by men heart-easing Mirth; 15 Whom lovely Venus, at a birth, With two sister Graces more, To ivy-crowned Bacchus bore: Or whether (as some sager sing) The frolic wind that breathes the spring, 20 Zephyr, with Aurora pIaying, As he met her once a-Maying, There, on beds of violets blue, And fresh-blown roses washed in dew, Filled her with thee,. a daughter fair, 25 So buxom, blithe, and debonair. Paradise Lost
by John Milton (1608 - 1674)
Type of Work:

Narrative, epic poem Setting
Hell, then Heaven, then newly-created Earth; all "in the beginning" Principal Characters
Satan, earlier called Lucifer, a fallen angel
Adam, the first man
Eve, the first woman God the Father God the Son Various angels and demons Story Overveiw (Recounted here is the story of Man's fall, Of Man's First Disobedience, and the Fruit Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste Bought Death into the World, and all our woe With loss of Eden, Till one greater Man Restore us, and regain the blissful Seat…) Satan, the once radiant Lucifer, and his angels lay in a formless, sulphurous lake of fire having justbeen driven out of Heaven. Their fall had sent them plummeting through space from their heavenly home down to Hell, leaving them beaten senseless. Only now, after lying unconscious for nine days, did Satan and his demons begin to rouse themselves. Accustomed to living in heavenly glory, they found their new home horrifying, and convened a council to determine how they might escape Hell and recover at least some of their former glory. Too proud to consider seeking re-admittance to Heaven through repentance, they agreed with Satan that it was "better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven." One demon favored remaining in Hell, but transforming it into a kingdom as powerful and glrious as Heaven. But another, Beelzebub, second in command, proposed a different plan: He had heard that God had designs to create a new world, to be the home "of some new race called man ... / To be created like to us, though less/ In power and excellence"

ABSTRACT: Records of the Milton Society of America, officially organized in 1948 to promote the advancement of the scholarship on John Milton and his works. A nearly complete sequence of annual dinner and meeting programs, as well as the Milton Evening booklets which preceded them, document the society's main function, which was to bring together and honor scholars in the field, The correspondence primarily relates to the planning of the dinner and the gathering of Milton-related works for the society's library. The annual James Holly Hanford award for the best book and for the best article related to Milton is an ongoing function of the society for which it receives submissions. The collection also includes the Seventeenth Century News , the official organ of the Milton Society of America, from 1942-1988 with only occasional missing issues. This publication highlights recent Milton scholarship and also includes The Neo-Latin News beginning in 1954.

John Milton (1608 - 1674)
An English poet, Milton's early works include the pastoral poems L'allegro and Il penseroso (1632), the masque Comus (written in 1633 in collaboration with the musician Henry Lawes), and the elegy Lycidas (1637). Among his latter works are Paradise Lost Paradise Regained (1677), and the classic drama Samson Agonistes (1677). Milton's first published poem was "On Shakespeare," an epitaph printed in the Second Folio (1632) of Shakespeare's plays. Born in London in 1608, his "niceness of nature" and "honest haughtiness," as well as his flowing locks, earned him the nickname "the lady of Christ's" at Christ's College, Cambridge when he attended there. His middle years were devoted to the Puritan Cause and pamphleteering, including one advocating divorce and another advocating freedom of the press. He was (Latin) secretary in 1649 to Oliver Cromwell. Although he supported the execution of King Charles in 1649, he was saved from any danger of the loss of his life with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. He married three times, had three daughters, and was able to live out his last years writing poetry, despite the blindness which had overtaken him completely by 1652. On His Blindness
(Written in 1652) When I consider how my light is spent
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide
