86 - Theological Table-Talk Theological Table-Talk
By Hugh T. Kerr HONESTY AS THEOLOGY The widening public controversy, occasioned by J. A. T. Robinson's Honest to God, apparently took both the author and his publisher by complete surprise. The book was first published in March, 1963, by the S.C.M. (Student Christian Movement Press, London), and shortly thereafter it appeared in an American edition (Westminster). In the interim, the booklet has sold a half-million copies, and on the basis of quantitative measurements it must be reckoned seriously as more than a tract for the times-it is a turning-point book. "Honesty" has taken on a new theological profile, and henceforth critical discussion of religion, church, and faith will need to presuppose the new posture. As Erik Routley has noted, for a long time it has been assumed by theologians and intelligently alert interpreters that "the only way of defending the faith" was in neo-orthodox categories. Now all is changed, or so it seems. For those who want to assess the immediate effects of this current classic, a big and fascinating sequel has been edited by David L. Edwards, the Director of S.C.M., called

In 1886, T.B.H. Cochrane, son of Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane of England, and his wife, Lady Adela Cochrane decided to go into the lumbering business and selected the present site of the school to set up their sawmill. By July, 1885 the mill was operational and a town had started to grow. The town site received it’s name, Mitford, in honour of Mrs. Percy Mitford, friend of Lady Adela, and investor in the Cochrane family's enterprises. By 1888 several buildings existed including the Cochrane's private home, bunk houses, a store, hotel, livery stable and saloon. In 1891 school was set up in the old saloon, with Miss Isabel Monilaws of Bruce County, Ontario, its first teacher.

I think it's worth the money. A very sweet book. I found it a true value: a delight for Mitford series readers plus a chance to introduce the characters to the youngsters. My 10 year old dyslexic son now wants the Mitford series read aloud to him. Look at her children's books: Miss Fannie's Hat and Jeremy. The Mitford Snowmen Don't waste your money. It takes less that 10 min. to read and I didn't even find it very entertaining. I was so disappointed! I have enjoyed all of Jan Karon's other books but I feel she wrote a few lines to earn some extra cash. I am so disappointed I may not buy another thing that she writes!

By Selina Hastings Nancy Mitford was the eldest of the seven children of David Mitford, second Baron Redesdale, and his wife, Sydney Bowles. Both her parents were descended from remarkable men: David's father, the first Lord Redesdale, was a distinguished diplomat and friend of Edward VII, while Sydney's father, Thomas Gibson Bowles, journalist and politician, was the founder of Vanity Fair and The Lady David and Sydney married in February 1904, soon afterwards moving into a little house in Graham Street, London, where Nancy was born in November the same year. A sister, Pamela, arrived in 1907, then Tom, the only boy, followed by Diana, Unity, Jessica, and Deborah. At the age of five Nancy was sent briefly to the Francis Holland School, conveniently situated at the other end of Graham Street, but when later that year the family moved to a larger house in Victoria Road, Kensington, her education was continued by governesses in the schoolroom. In later life her lack of formal education provided a never-failing source of grievance. David Mitford, always known to his children as "Farve", inherited the title in 1916, and moved from London, which he hated, to his family house, Batsford Park in Gloucestershire, then to the smaller Asthall Manor in Oxfordshire, before finally settling in a house largely designed by himself in the nearby village of Swinbrook. It was this Cotswold childhood with her brother and five sisters that Nancy later portrayed so vividly in her novel

Miss Fannies Hat > Customer Review #1: A delightful book for everyone!
Jan Karon has done it again! Not only has she kept me spellbound with The Mitford Years, but Jan Karon has created a terrific platform for childrens books as well. Miss Fannies Hat is a wonderful, true story about Jan Karons own grandmother, that demonstrates the joys of sacrifice. A lesson can be learned from Miss Fannie‘I can only pray that Jan Karon writes more childrens books about her grandmother! Miss Fannies Hat > Customer Review #2: Wonderful Easter story Having read the Mitford series by Jan Karon, I was thrilled to discover she also has written childrens books. I know a lady just like Miss Fannie at my church. Its a wonderful story for old and young alike. My womens group had everyone wear hats to their May meeting and shared this book with all the gals. They loved it. And the surprise at the back of the book is really enjoyed by my granddaughters.

Introduction
Come away to Mitford, the small town that takes care of its own. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Mitford is a crazy quilt of saints and sinners lovable eccentrics all. Seen through the eyes of Father Tim, the long-suffering Village Rector, Mitford abounds in both mysteries and miracles, compelling readers to return again and again to this beloved series. In the tradition of James Herriot, Bailey White, and Garrison Keillor, author Jan Karon brilliantly captures the foibles and delights of a hilarious cast of characters. Book I: In At Home in Mitford , Father Tim finds himself running on empty. Even after twelve years of shepherding his flock, he finds that Emma, his secretary, persists in treating him like a ten-year-old. Barnabas, a huge black dog, adopts him, and a hostile mountain boy, Dooley, is thrust into his care. To add to his confusion, a growing friendship with Cynthia Coppersmith, his new neighbor, stirs emotions he hasn't felt in years. Book II: In A Light in the Window , Father Tim is in love and running scared. Cynthia has won his heart, but he is set in his ways and afraid of letting go. To complicate things, a wealthy and powerful widow pursues Father Tim, plying him with crab cobbler and old sherry. In the ensuing comedy of errors, he just can't set his foot right. Somehow the antidote to this confusion rests in the history of his oldest and dearest parishioner, Miss Sadie, and the discovery of family she didn't know she had.

'A New Song' by Jan Karon Ordinary people take a break from their ordinary lives Sunday, May 16, 1999 By Rebecca Sodergren, Post-Gazette Staff Writer A New Song By Jan Karon Viking Penguin
Jan Karon doesn’t write about sensational murders, sweep-you-off-your-feet romances or exotic places. She writes about the mundane stuff: Tiffs over church parishioners who insist on listing cars for sale in the pew bulletins. A lovelorn bachelor placing personal ads in the newspaper. A toddler who won’t eat anything but spaghetti. Stuff we see every day here in the real world. And her readers love it. Her books about the small, fictional town of Mitford, N.C., are best sellers. Last week, Karon stopped here on a tour promoting her latest book and the fifth in the Mitford series. It’s a risky book because it takes readers out of the Mitford they’ve grown to know and love. Father Tim Kavanaugh, an Episcopal rector, has retired from Lord’s Chapel in Mitford, but he and wife Cynthia accept an interim church assignment to Whitecap Island, off the coast, a long way from home and prone to hot and stormy weather.

    True Calling
By Tracy Jones There are dozens of books that promise to deliver a formula for a best-selling novel. Jan Karon didn't follow the advice in any of them. Create larger-than-life characters. Nope. She built her first novel, At Home in Mitford , around an aging Episcopal priest and his decidedly provincial parishioners. Give readers exotic settings. Again, no. Instead, Karon gave them four novels set in the imaginary hamlet of Mitford, a town of about 1,000, a quiet place with tree-lined streets, mom and pop businesses, and plenty of opportunities for gossip. Construct gripping, spiraling sequences of events. In books where the central character's dilemma might be whether or not to return a casserole dish to the little old lady who's been winking at him from the pews, plot twists aren't the main attraction. Why then, have readers placed Jan Karon's four novels about Mitford on bestseller lists across the country? And why are they clamoring for more? Has something in Karon's work unexpectedly resonated with readers? "Honey, has it ever," Karon says. This despite the fact that Father Tim, the main character in the Mitford series, is, as his author describes him, "more than middle-aged."

    Introduction
The Savage in Literature Tween Snow and Fire . When he finds tribesmen hunting on his land ‘he mutters between his set teeth, "I’ll put a bullet through his cur, and lick the nigger himself within an inch of his life." (2) Of his attempt to raise game for gentlemanly hunting he asks his friend Eustace Milne, "What on earth is the good of me trying to preserve the game, with a location of these black scum not ten miles from my door". (9) Some of Mitford`s stories are entirely conventional tales of imperial adventure. In some, however, the format and conventions of the adventure story are used to question the assumptions of jingoistic imperialism; in these stories the British are expected to treat native Africans decently, to respect their territory and only to fight them in self defence and with regret. How a decent colonist can behave in all these ways and expect to hold on to land previously grazed and hunted by African tribes is a problem which Mitford does not fully address. In most of these books Africa and the expansion of colony and Empire are described by Western narrators. Whatever sympathy might be shown to specific black tribes and individuals or to particular tribal causes, the underlying assumption is that the growth of the Empire is a fact of history. Specific manifestations of this expansion may be criticised but the underlying momentum and process is simply assumed to be unalterable, not a particularly surprising assumption for an upper class Englishman serving the late nineteenth century empire.

Jan Karon invites us there in her Mitford series of books. The series follows the Rev. Timothy Kavanaugh, pastor of The Chapel of Our Lord and Savior, as he's adopted by a black dog the size of a Buick, deals with his opinionated secretary, has his life turned upside-down by an 11-year-old mountain boy who's old beyond his years, and bewitched, bothered and bewildered by his lovely new neighbor!
