B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) French courtier and author of ESSAIS (1572-80, 1588), which established a new literary form. Montaigne has remained the greatest exponent of the essay, a short piece that discusses the author's personal thoughts about a particular subject. His successors have learned from him the inexhaustible potentiality of the self as subject, the role of change in the selection of subjects, the replacement of logical thought by free association, and the use of essay as 'a literary device for saying almost everything about anything' (Aldous Huxley). Essais , which reflected his wide interests and learning.. Montaigne's first book of collected essays was published when he was 47. He argued that the beliefs of different cultures should be respected, and covered in his texts a huge range of subjects, including how ro converse properly, how to endure pain, how to prepare for death, how to read well, how to bring up children, and how to deal with the sexual urge. Montaignes's voice is skeptical and sincere; "I am myself the subject of my book; it is not reasonable to expect you to waste your leisure on a matter so frivolous anmd empty"

MICHEL EYGUEM DE MONTAIGNE (1533-1592)
"I have never seen a greater monster or miracle than myself." Essays Montaigne is a great French Renaissance thinker who took himself as the great object of study in his Essays. In studying himself Montaigne is studying mankind. He attempted to weigh or 'assay' his nature, habits, his own opinions and those of others. He is searching for truth by reflecting on his readings, his travels as well as his experiences both public and private. Montaigne's writing style is light and untechnical. He was also a striking representative of Renaissance skepticism and fideism. Essentially fideism is a strategy which uses skepticism in order to clear the ground for the entrance of Catholicism. Montaigne's skepticism is largely confined to An Apology for Raymond Sebond which was originally the (very long) twelth chapter of Book II of the Essays but is often published separately. (Unfortunately our electronic text of the Essays does not contain the Apology Montaigne seeks to humble man's pride: "...there is a plague on Man, the opinion that he knows something." This skepticism is connected with the doctrine of Christian "folly" which says that God's wisdom is to be found in the lowly and the meek, and that the belief that one has knowledge prevents one from accepting the truths of religion. (One can find this tradition in Pico della Mirandola and Erasmus and others as well). Montaigne is famous for arguing that man is not in any way superior to the beasts, in fact, quite the contrary.

    Biographical note
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533 - 1592) was a French Renaissance thinker who took himself as the object of study in his Essays. He was born in Périgord. A lawyer and politician, he served as mayor of Bordeaux from 1581 to 1585, but had already started to write his great work, the Essais, which were published in 1580, enlarged in 1588 and still not completed to his satisfaction at the time of his death.

    Michel de Montaigne
Two years later Montaigne married Françoise de la Chassaigne, the daughter of a parliamentary advocate. They had five daughters, only one of whom survived him. In 1570 at the age of thirty-seven he sold his post of counsellor, and in the following year retired to the château de Montaigne. There, from 1571 to 1580, he wrote his Essays . The first edition of this work contained only two books. He then set out on a journey which lasted a year and a half, of which he has written in his Journal. He went to Lorraine and Alsace, started for Switzerland, crossed Bavaria and came down to the Tyrol, saw Venice and reached Rome, the end of his journey, where he received letters of citizenship. During his absence he had been made mayor of Bordeaux, which office he held for four years (1581-85), his duties coming to an end when the pest broke out. Montaigne being absent from the town did not feel obliged to return to it. In 1588 he published a new edition of his Essays , corrected and augmented by a third book. He continued to revise his work until his death. In 1595 Mlle de Gournay, the young woman who at the age of twenty-two became his enthusiastic admirer, and whom he called his daughter, issued a new edition, in which she inserted the revisions and additions when he had indicated in a copy in 1588.

    Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, 1533-1592
My research into Montaigne Internet sites was rather hopeless. I did manage to locate a brief life (Oregon State) and another short biography . There is a scholarly journal, Montaigne Studies , published yearly out of Chicago. Some of Montaigne's Essays have been digitized. There is a collection of the essays in English at Renascence Editions . Virginia Tech is the home of Charles Cotton's translation of the Essays . To really get an idea of Montaigne's urbanity, intellectual humility and pedagogical appreciation, read (and re-read) his essay, Of the Education of Children , the full text of which appears below. Be sure to check out Three Windows , an informative and extremely innovative website about Montaigne by Daniel Cuthbert. See also Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay " Montaigne, or the Skeptic, " from his Representative Men Of the Education of Children To Madame Diane de Foix, Comtesse de Gurson. The philosophers, Chrysippus and Epicurus, were in this of two quite contrary humors: the first not only in his books mixed passages and sayings of other authors, but entire pieces, and, in one,the whole "Medea" of Euripides; which gave Apollodorus occasion to say, that should a man pick out of his writings all that was none of his, he would leave him nothing but blank paper: whereas the latter, quite contrary, in three hundred volumes that he left behind him, has not so much as any one quotation.

    Michel Eyquem de Montaigne
French writer. His life's work, the Essays (begun in 1571) established the essay as a literary genre and record the evolution of his moral ideas. Quotes: For my part I have never been able to see, without displeasure, an innocent and defenseless animal, from whom we receive no offense or harm, pursued and slaughtered . . . Plato, in his picture of the golden age under Saturn, reckons, among the chief advantages that a man then had, his communication with beasts, of whom, inquiring and informing himself, he knew the true qualities and differences of them all, by which he acquired a very perfect intelligence and prudence, and led his life more happily than we could do. Need we a better proof to condemn human imprudence in the concern of beasts? - An Apology of Raymond Sebond extracts from 'The Essays': Some mothers think it great sport to see a child wring off a chicken's necke, and strive to beat a dog or cat. And some fathers are so fond-foolish that they will construe as a good augur or fore-boding of a martiall mind to see their sons misuse a poor peasant, or tug a lackey that doth not defend himself. . . yet are they the true deeds or roots of cruclty, of tyranny, and of treason. In youth they bud, and afterwards grow to strength, and come to perfection by means of custom. After they had accustomed themselves at Rome to the spectacles of the slaughter of animals, they proceeded to those of the slaughter of men, to the gladiators.
