    Historical/Biographical Note
After an unsuccessful attempt to form the Collectors’ Club of Newark in 1902, the Carteret Book Club was founded 12 December 1908 at a meeting at the Public Library of Newark under the leadership of James E. Howell. It was named for Philip Carteret, the first colonial governor of New Jersey (1665). The club’s mission was to bring together book collectors, printers and other bookmen; to publish original or previously unpublished material (often with specially commissioned illustrations); and to hold free exhibitions of rare and fine printing. Thomas L. Raymond, Mayor of Newark, was the club’s first president. The long-time secretaries were, first, John Cotton Dana, librarian of the Newark Public Library, and then William Macey Stone, who held the position until his death in 1941. The club was organized as a corporation in which members bought shares of stock. It was dissolved in 1957.

Michael Jackson: My brother Jackie came to my house and said, "Are you watching this show that's on TV? All they do is play music. It's MTV." I put it on and thought the concept was very interesting. What I didn't like were the videos that were a collage of images; I thought that if I were to do one, I would do something with a beginning, a middle and an ending, like a short film.

"At least one historian of printing believes that the first century of printing in Philadelphia was more brilliant in its accomplishments than any of the other colonies during the same period....Pennsylvania led the way in papermaking and the manufacturing of ink. The first American Bible in English was published in Philadelphia as were the first classic, first Shakespeare, first novel, first magazine, and first foreign-language newspaper, besides the first color printing and the largest single book printed in colonial times."

RHS Students Shine in Reading Contest
    By Joe Scotchie
The Christopher Morley Knothole Association held its annual reading contest at the Bryant Library, Tuesday night, Oct. 6. Four Roslyn High School students were among the 16 high school students who participated in the event. When the reading contest was over, the home team participants did not disappoint. Each of the four RHS students delivered prize-winning readings. Lisa Schwartz and David Moskowitz took first-place honors, while Lisa Weinreb and Deborah Kroplick finished, respectively, with third and fourth-place awards. Both Ms. Schwartz and Mr. Moskowitz read from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Ms. Weinreb read from Dust by Saki (H.H. Munro) and Ms. Kroplick read the "Hands" passage from Sherwood Anderson's novel of Midwestern small-town life, Winesburg, Ohio. Anjali Saraf of Wheatley High School came in second for her reading of Thoreau's famous essay, Walden. Fourth-place honors also went to Kristin Kovner of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington who read from Saki's The Interlopers. Other high schools represented at the event were Locust Valley, Mineola, and North Shore. The judges selected winners based on "eloquence, interpretation, [and] suitability" of the excerpt and the students' own introductory remarks.

Morley, Christopher D. (1890 - 1957) Rhodes Scholar and author, Christopher Morley moved to his home "Green Escape" in Roslyn Estates in 1920. He later built a one room writing studio on this property, which he called "The Knothole." Well known as a columnist, poet and playwright, Morley produced some of his plays in Roslyn at the Millpond Playhouse. This building, built as the War Memorial Building, is today home of the Bryant Library. After his death in 1957, friends and neighbors joined together to save "The Knothole" and had it moved into the newly named Christopher Morley Park, where it still stands. Books, photographs, new clippings and articles by and about Morley are available in the Library's Local History Collection.
