The Forster Collection
Introduction
John Forster (1812-1876) was a noted biographer, critic, essayist and historian, probably best remembered for his biography of his close friend, the novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870). In the course of his life Forster collected a vast library, mainly, but not exclusively, of books and pamphlets. He bequeathed this collection to his wife until her death; whereupon it would pass to what was then the South Kensington Museum, so that it could be used by the nation. She generously waived her rights in order to fulfill his wishes more quickly. The Forster Collection is one of two very large and distinct collections within the National Art Library , the other being the Dyce Collection
English literature : from Augustan to Victorian
Forster was literary editor of the weekly Examiner from 1833 to 1847, and then its editor from 1847 to 1855. He arrived early enough in the literary world to know some of the later Romantic writers, such as Leigh Hunt (1784-1859); and remained long enough to see some of the first of the later Victorian novelists, such as George Meredith (1828-1909). The collection contains many nineteenth century novels which were given to him, either as review or presentation copies; and usually with an affectionate inscription from the author. One such example is Sartor Resartus (1838) by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881). In addition to befriending some of the most famous writers of his day, Forster was also an influential critic who helped to establish younger literary figures, such as the poet Robert Browning (1812-1889). There is a copy of his work

Quote Archive Understand Your Bible from Adam to Zion: A Clear Explanation of God's Word How People Grow: What the Bible Reveals about Personal Growth "A concordance is an index to a book. It's usually arranged in alphabetical order and shows the location of each word in the book. It often supplies several words of the context in which each word is found. The Exhaustive Concordance by Dr. James Strong (1822-1894) went beyond the mere listing of words and references to give "exhaustive" a whole new meaning in biblical reference books. An exhaustive word index to the KJV and a simple guide to the relation of the English Bible to the original [Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek] languages, Strong's Concordance has remained unsurpassed for more than a century. However, advances in biblical scholarship and computer technology, as well as shortcomings in Strong's methodology, have made a new edition desirable and even necessary. For the first time, The Strongest Strong's Exhaustive Concordance rebuilt the original from the ground up. We seek to honor and improve on the strengths of Strong's innovative excellence." John R. Kohlenberger III in The Strongest Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible "Grace and truth together reverse the effects of the fall, which were separation from God and others. Grace and truth together invite us out of isolation and into relationship. Grace, when it is combined with truth, invites the true self, the 'me' as I really am, warts and all, into relationship. It is one thing to have safety in relationship; it is quite another to be truly known and accepted in this relationship. With grace alone, we are safe from condemnation, but we cannot experience true intimacy. When the one who offers grace also offers truth (truth about who we are, truth about who he or she is, and truth about the world around us), and we respond with our true self, then real intimacy is possible. Real intimacy always comes in the company of truth." Dr. Henry Cloud in

Morley, Henry Examiner . From 1865-89 he was Professor of English Literature at University College He was the author of various biographies, including Lives of Palissy, Cornelius A grippa , and Clement Marot . His principal work, however, was English Writers (10 vols. 1864-94), coming down to Shakespeare. His First Sketch of English Literature Morris, Sir Lewis published Songs of Two Worlds , which showed the influence of Tennyson, and was well received, though rather by the wider public than by more critical circles. It was followed in 1876-77 by The Epic of Hades , which had extraordinary popularity, and which, though exhibiting undeniable talent both in versification and narrative power, lacked the qualities of the higher kinds of poetry. It deals in a modern spirit with the Greek myths and legends. Other works are A Vision of Saints, Gwen, The Ode of Life

    Introduction
The collection contains Xeroxes of autograph letters to Henry Morley concerning the business of the nineteenth century periodical Household Words . The papers cover the period 1844 - 1868, and have a particular focus on the years 1850 - 1851. The main correspondent is William Henry Wills , the periodical's assistant editor. In 1970 the papers were donated to the University of Sussex by a descendant of Morley.
    Household Words
Household Words made its debut on Saturday, 30th March, 1850. The creation of Charles Dickens, it fulfilled a long-cherished wish of his to direct a journal in which he could communicate personally to his large circle of readers. Household Words was aimed at a middle-class audience, and its "conductor" Dickens described it as a "weekly miscellany of general literature". It was intended, in part, to replace the sensation-orientated periodical literature that constituted a large part of the public's literary diet. Dickens was adamant that the material printed should be lively and personal, but that facts should be accurate. The contents of Household Words fell roughly into three categories:
    • Social matters . The periodical espoused the cause of the poor and working classes. Articles campaigned against inadequate sanitation, illiteracy, homelessness, and many other contemporary social injustices. By presenting these issues in a more accessible style, the periodical attempted to bring them to the attention of a wider public than was reached by the sober, specialized, upper-class journals that normally discussed them.
