The Discovery of C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)
This comet was discovered on July 23, 1995 UT (Universal Time = Greenwich, England time, which astronomers use as a common time for reporting observations) by Alan Hale, New Mexico, and Thomas Bopp, Arizona. This is the first discovery for both, although Alan Hale is one of the top visual comet observers in the world having seen about 200 comet apparitions. The discoverers' comments about their discovery can be found here.

Biographical information:
Charles Morris was born in Woodstock, Connecticut. He entered the navy in 1799 and served in the Tripolitan War. At the outbreak of the War of 1812 he was made first lieutenant under Hull on the Constitution and later was given command of the Adams and the Congress. He served as commander at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, 1817-1822, and the Boston Navy Yard, 1824-1832. Morris' superb seamanship and administrative talent earned him the highest professional praise. Throughout his career Morris was interested in naval architecture and the problems of ship construction. As a member of the Board of Navy Commissioners, 1823-1827 and 1832-1841, Morris was instrumental in a number of naval reforms.

Morris was dispatched on September 23, to a small strip mall at Hollenbeck and El Camino Real in Sunnyvale in response to a prowler call from the manager of a grocery store who heard noises from the roof. Morris apparently confronted two men who had just burglarized an adjacent drug store by dropping down from the afore-mentioned roof. He radioed for assistance, but before help could arrive, he was jumped by the burglars and shot with his own weapon. One suspect was arrested at the scene, and another was arrested a short time later at his home behind the shopping center. Morris, 34, had been with Sunnyvale Police Department for slightly more than 3 years. He was survived by his wife.

Recent News and Observations
Last Updated: March 11, 2003
For those of you wondering why the updates on this page are becoming very infrequent, the reason is simple...I have less time to work on the COHP. This happens from time-to-time when the projects I work on have major events. My schedule over the next seven weeks is extremely busy. While I hope to post most or all observations I receive, the updates will not be on a regular basis. During the period March 22 - April 6, there will be no updates at all. I am often asked why I don't get (outside) help for the COHP. Unfortunately, computer security issues make that option unworkable. I have posted a few recent observations. csm 3/11/03
To Contributors: Please check the date of your observation carefully. I am getting several observers reporting observations in "2002 Jan." and even "2001 Jan."... Also, please, please, please submit your observations in the proper format... close is not good enough. I reserve the right NOT to publish observations that require work on my part. csm
