The San Francisco Calamity by Earthquake and Fire
Charles Morris
Introduction by Roger W. Lotchin
On the morning of April 18, 1906, San Francisco was struck by a violent earthquake that shook the city and ignited an even deadlier menacea three-day fire that burned up and down the city's streets and incinerated its buildings and neighborhoods. Landmarks, homes, hotels, churches, and artwork were reduced to rubble and ash. Hundreds died and thousands more struggled to find food, money, and shelter or fled the city by ferry. Pennsylvania native Charles Morris, one of the more prolific and versatile writers of his day, went to San Francisco immediately following the earthquake to interview survivors and observe the mayhem. The San Francisco Calamity by Earthquake and Fire was rushed into print a few weeks thereafter. Considered the first full and balanced account of the earthquake and fire, Morris's gripping record combines dramatic eyewitness accounts and firsthand observations with scientific fact and grim detail, contrasting romantic tales of heroism and escape with the stark realism of devastation, death, and loss. Enhanced by numerous illustrations

From Triumph to Turmoil Latest Century Foundation Book by Charles R. Morris Reveals the Close Relationship Between Innovation and Crises in World Financial Markets Despite the boom in the United States, the world has had no shortage of financial crises. Japan's banking system, East Asia's currency instability, and the seriously troubled economies of Russia and many Latin American countries are but a few recent examples. Are these crises a sign of an economically unstable world? Are they caused by greedy speculators, crony capitalism, or the forces of globalization? Are these new financial trends we are observing, or are they normal financial cycles being played out at warp speed? In Money, Greed, and Risk: Why Financial Crises and Crashes Happen , a Century Foundation book published by Times Business, financial expert Charles R. Morris offers new insights into the cause of financial turmoil at home and abroad. In prose accessible to a general audience but substantive enough for sophisticated investors, Morris analyzes both historical and contemporary events and argues that each market innovation carries with it the seeds for a subsequent market crisis. He examines the eerie parallel between the current Asian crisis and America's own financial problems a century ago and shows that crises are both inevitable and understandable.
