In 1939 Alfred Ernest Gledhill of Gaylord, Kansas wrote a book about his parents emigration to America and their subsequent pioneer settlement. In 1990 his great-niece Mrs Janet Brooks of Portis, Kansas, a distant cousin of mine visited London and gave me copies of the book, photographs and other documents, including family correspondence. These form the basis of this account.
Joseph Gledhill, fourth of the five children of Joseph Gledhill and his wife Hannah Thornton was born on 15 June 1813 and baptised the following month at Southowram Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, near Halifax. His father, a stone mason and master of stone quarries died in 1816. Young Joseph Gledhill became a wool factor and commission salesman, working from a warehouse in Norwich, where he lived for many years. It was there, in 1839 that he married Maria Friar and their four sons and one daughter were born. The eldest, a son born in July 1842 and named Joseph, was to become Alfred Ernest's father. Joseph and Maria returned to Bradford from Norwich in about 1856 where their young family continued their education.

An Amarillo native and pioneer in pediatric cardiology, Dr. Joseph R. Latson graduated with honors from Amarillo High School, where he was a Sandie cheerleader and member of the track team. He graduated at age 17, then joined the Navy. He married Shirley Swenson Aug. 18, 1949 in Amarillo. Latson was inspired by his father, Dr. Harvey Latson, an Amarillo cardiologist, to pursue a career in medicine. The younger Latson completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane University in New Orleans and in 1953 he graduated with honors from Baylor College of Medicine. After a residency at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston in 1955, Latson spent a year as a pediatric cardiology fellow. He also was a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where he worked with Dr. Helen Taussig, founder of pediatric cardiology. An authority on congenital heart diseases, Latson worked as a clinical instructor in pediatrics cardiology at Baylor and served as chief of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. He established the Hermann Pediatric Cardiology Clinic.

By Richard Williams, Globe-News Staff Writer

Ernest R. Archambeau was a nationally-recognized historian and Texas Panhandle pioneer. Born Dec. 25, 1895, in Missouri, Archambeau moved to the Texas Panhandle in 1914 after 15 months military duty in France during World War I. In France, he studied at the Universite de Montpellier. Before the war, he attended Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. Archambeau earned a bachelor's degree in economics from West Texas Normal College in Canyon. In 1920, he married Zerah McReynolds in Canyon. While enrolled at WT, Archambeau developed a love for local history. He was required to interview an old-timer of the Panhandle. His choice was Jose Romero, son of Casimiro Romero, an Old Tascosa pioneer. "As I interviewed (Jose Romero), he got me so interested in the Plains history that I knew I had to pursue it further," Archambeau said in 1968. In 1926, he moved to Amarillo to pursue dual careers as an insurance salesman and amateur historian.

MIT Reports to the President 1997-98
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
Undergraduate enrollment in computer science has grown dramatically in the past few years. Traditionally one third of the EECS undergraduates majored in computer science, and two thirds in electrical engineering. Recently the statistics have shown that more favor CS. However, th emost interesting trend is that now more than half the students elect to pursue a new undergraduate program which retains greater breadth at the junior level, and does not require the student to designate either EE or CS. These trends are expected to continue. The Department must be prepared to shift the balance of its faculty to more closely approximate student interest. We will find this easier than many other universities where EE and CS are in different departments. Overall enrollment in EECS continues to be high, and the students continue to be extraordinarily well qualified academically. For the past two decades our computer science faculty and graduate students have had their offices and laboratories in a building that is off campus. This geographical barrier has tended to impede collaboration between CS faculty and those on campus, and has worked against the notion that the fields of EE and CS are really closely related and, indeed, can best be thought of as a single discipline. We are currently raising the money necessary to erect a new complex of buildings on campus, adjacent to one of the laboratories housing many EECS faculty. The computer-science laboratories currently off campus (the Laboratory for Computer Science and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) will move into this complex, along with the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. Construction is planned to begin in 1998.
