He joined the Social Democratic Federation 1883, but, after fighting with Henry Hyndman, the founder of the group, he founded his own group, the Socialist League. From William Morris. 'William Morris' William Morris (1834-1896) was born in Walthamstow, Essex, the son of a wealthy city stockbroker. He was educated at Marlborough public school, then went to Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and Philip Webb (1831-1915), both of whom became lifelong friends. Both Morris and Burne-Jones intended entering the Church, but they gained inspiration from the writings of John Ruskin , and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art'. After leaving university, Morris spent the years between 1856 and 1861 pursuing various careers, including training under George Street as an architect. Through Burne-Jones, he also met Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelite painters. Encouraged by Rossetti, Morris turned from architecture to painting, and was at the same time writing poetry. In 1859 he married Jane Burden, the archetypal Pre-Raphaelite beauty with brooding eyes, who appears in several of Rossetti's paintings. Early in their marriage they moved into 'Red House' in Bexleyheath, Kent, which had been designed for them by Philip Webb. They created murals, carvings, stained glass, metal work, embroidery and furniture. Their success was mainly due to Morris and Webb's associations with architects, church decoration being their most important activity.

Dunsany, Eddison, Pratt, Tolkein, Peake, Howard, et al. , are successors to this great original. By fantasy , I mean the tale of quest, adventure or war set in an invented age and worldscape of the author's own imagination. -Lin Carter (Introduction to The Wood Beyond the World I like the definition of fantasy that Carter provides there and William Morris is certainly an early practitioner of the genre, but I think you've got to give pride of place to George MacDonald [see Orrin's review of The Princess and the Goblin George MacDonald (Grade: A) At any rate, William Morris is one of the more interesting and influential characters of Victorian England. Repelled by the changes that the Industrial Revolution had brought to Britain, he yearned for more pastoral times. By profession a Medievalist, he translated Norse sagas and printed them in beautiful editions. An artist and founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he designed many of the flowery tapestries and wallpapers that we associate with the Victorian drawing room. Politically he was a utopian Socialist. And, as Carter says, as a writer he helped to create the fantasy novel. In all of these pursuits he harkened back to an idealized past, no where more so than in his writing.

He was born in Walthamstow, then a village, and moved to a grand residence there called Water House at the age of 14 - this has since become the William Morris Gallery. He studied at Oxford with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but while there he met Edward Coley Burne-Jones, also studying for the church, and they both began to turn towards art. They were persuaded by Rossetti to give up the studies and become artists. Morris did a year in architectural practice of G. E. Street, and then turned to painting. However, he soon found that his metier was design. The cooperative attempt to decorate his new house (the Red House, built by Philip Webb)at Bexleyheath, south east of London, lead to the setting up of the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. The partners were Morris, Burne-Jones, Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, Philip Webb, Charles Faulkner, and Peter Paul Marshall, a surveyor. The firm was set up as a 'company of Fine Art Workmen', designing and producing (or at least supervising the production of) furniture, wallpaper, murals, tapestrywork, stained glass windows, metalwork, tapestries, and smaller works such as tiles and embroidery. It started in 8 Lion Square, London, where there was sufficient space for workshops, showrooms, and a kiln in the basement for tile production. The firm later became simply Morris and Co. when Morris - always blessed with a private income - bought out the other partners.

Morris encouraged to return to handmade objects and rejected standard tastes. William Morris Born: 24 March 1834 Place of Birth: Elm House in Walthamstow, England Died: 3 October 1896 Place of Death: Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, England (William Morris) William Morris, one of the most brilliant and innovative progenitors of modern graphic design, was born at Elm House, the family estate, one of nine children. Despite the "boorish" Welsh blood, the family had done quite well for themselves. (It's interesting to note that also in 1834, popular classical composer Berlioz wrote "Childe Harold," based on Byron's poems.) Growing up, Morris loved the romantic chivalry and simplicity of anything medieval (later he said he felt he'd been born out of his time). He read Walter Scott; his parents even got him a pony so he could play knight. He was happy and even spoiled, though quite temperamental. Much later his daughter Jenny was diagnosed with epilepsy, and he often wondered if some of his 'rages' weren't epilepsy (or Tourettes) related. He was particularly close to a sister, Emma, at least until she got married. Later, he wrote poetry inspired by Chaucer, Tennyson, Keats and Browning. His romantic attachment to the natural world was already forming and evolving. His textiles furniture, wall paper and fabric designs were to become the epitome of 'the organic,' which was so much a part of his perception of reality. While religiously agnostic, the physical world was forever jolting him by its sheer majesty, giving him what we would now call an almost spiritual 'global sense.'

He was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and Augustus Pugin who championed the return of gothic architecture (the last true architectural movement in their opinion.) Spurred by the experience of furnishing his home, Red House , Morris set up a studio in 1861 with several associates, including architect Philip Webb and English artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones house as a total work of art, with all of the interior objects designed by the architect , emerged from this studio and remained standard practice throughout the Arts and Crafts movement. William Morris 1834 - 1896 Poet, artist, conservationist, craftsman, calligrapher, printer, socialist and "dreamer of dreams" : William Morris was all of these and more. Born in 1834, much of Morris' life was influenced by the Cotswold countryside. Kelmscott Manor near Lechlade, not far from Bibury, became his country home from 1871 until his death in 1896. Kelmscott played an important part in his life and can still be visited today. Many craftsmen frustrated by the industrial processes they faced, found the unspoiled character of the Cotswolds ideal to demonstrate their ideas and beliefs. The world renowned Guild of Handicraft came to Chipping Camden from London in 1902 and set up their workshops in the old silk mill in Sheep Street. Today it remains a centre for crafts, and descendants of the original group are still there! You can visit the Trust's permanent exhibition of their work and see the contribution made by modern designers and makers. All over the Cotswolds are other examples. A group flourished in the upper Frome valley above Stroud and around Sapperton, making fine furniture. There are churches with examples of stained glass craftsmanship, as at Shipton-under-Wychwood, Burford and Cirencester for example.
