Articles Science Fiction Art by Jeff Robinson It can be argued that the origins of Science Fiction art date back to the works of Leonardo da Vinci While his drawings were definitely art, and inarguably science, many of his drawings were of devices that did not exist during his time. Thus, while his elaborate plans for submersible ships, tanks and flying machines were made seriously, they were also fantasies of fiction. Leonardo da Vince might therefore be considered the first science fiction illustrator. Some of the most famous early illustrations that set a standard for early science fiction works were created by the English artist Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), who rose to fame as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll ’s Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass While not considered science fiction, Lewis Carroll’s works were fantasy and contemporary satire that attracted great attention. The elaborate and imaginative pen and ink drawings that accompanied these books became standards for SF literature for decades to come. In the mid-nineteenth century, the industrial revolution had sufficiently affected society at large to the point that “scientific romance” stories, which would later be called

Great thinkers throughout history have embraced and written about Karma and Reincarnation. Bandwidth and time constraints don't allow for anything more than a few fleeting examples here. For a more thorough treatment of the subjects, I recommend the book, "Reincarnation: An East-West Anthology," compiled by Joseph Head and S. L. Cranston, and published by Aeon Publishing Company, 2000. It includes quotations from the world's religions and over 400 western thinkers. Here are some thoughts on the subject: "The doctrine of transmigration has been secretly taught from ancient times to small numbers of people, as a traditional truth which was not to be divulged." - St. Jerome (340-420) "God generates beings, and sends them back over and over again, till they return to Him." - The Koran "The belief or the doctrine of the transmigration of souls is a firm and infallible doctrine accepted by the whole assemblage of our church with one accord, so that there is none to be found who would dare deny it…Indeed, there are a great number of sages in Israel who hold firm to this doctrine so that they made it a dogma, a fundamental point in our religion. We are therefore in duty bound to obey and to accept this dogma with acclamation…as the truth of it has been incontestably demonstrated by the Zohar, and all books of the Kabalists." - Rabbi Manasseh Ben Israel, Theologian and statesman (1604-1657)

SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN
(April 22, 2002)
From ARGOSY ALL-STORY, where it was run as a five-part serial in 1927, this book by Abraham Merritt is a complete delight for fans of pulp adventure. Although it was made into a silent film in 1929, from all accounts that version had little resemblance to the book. SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN desperately needs to made into a faithful movie today! I can see the tense final scene making audiences go wild. If you see a copy of this in a used bookstore, it's worth snatching up and putting it aside for a rainy night when you 'd like a good read.
Narrator James Kirkham is a slightly more upper-class version of Indiana Jones. An explorer who basically loots other countries (he admits much of the treasures in museums are basically stolen swag), Kirkham is chosen against his will to be an agent for a bizarre criminal who calls himself Satan. As sinister masterminds go, Satan is right up there with Fu Manchu and Professor Moriarty. He runs a worldwide organization absolutely enslaved by his will, dedicated to amassing the greatest collection of artistic treasures ever assembled. Satan uses any tactic to run his empire, including murder and torture and the addictive hallucinagenic drug 'keft'. His slaves run from murderous thugs to famous film stars to scientists. He intends Kirkham to serve as a skilled thief, obtaining priceless statues
and gems and so forth.

  • The Fionavar Tapestry The Summer Tree The Wandering Fire The Darkest Road
Bad Things Can Happen To Good People in Kay's books. Be forewarned, but read them anyway. This is yet another take on Arthurian legend. Tigana
A standalone about a land under a particularly nasty curse, and the inhabitants' fight to end it. Complex, very well written. Your FAQmaker tried it after receiving numerous glowing recommendations, and now adds her voice to the chorus A Song for Arbonne
Another excellent standalone from Kay. The fantasy world is loosely based on medieval France (specifically Eleanor of Aquitaine's Court of Love). The Lions of Al-Rassan
Kay's latest, set in a time and place reminiscent of Moorish Spain. Wow, do I like his stuff - great characters, marvelous story, vivid world. He just gets better and better. The fantasy content of Kay's work is shrinking, and it is virtually non-existent here. The Sarantine Mosaic Sailing to Sarantium Lord of Emperors
Kay's latest, set in an alternate Holy Roman Empire.
