Information on, and listing of Munros.

The Munros and Munro-bagging The Munros and Munro-bagging Fact File A Munro is : A montain IN SCOTLAND over 3000 feet as defined by the list known as Munro's Tables. Why do the Munros A question that occurs frequently. Usually while trying to forge a way through deep heather and peat bog in the pouring rain. Or while laying in your tent at eleven o'clock at night with midges quietly nibbling at your earlobes. Or while starting the morning with another boring five mile walk in. Or while looosing your bearings in thick cloud on a vast whaleback ridge. And so it goes on. Maybe its all the trials that make it all worthwhile, knowing that when the goal, or next summit has been acheived it was through hard work and toil and is appreciated all the more as a result. So what about the positive motivations for tackling the Munros? I've been adding to my personal list since I started and so here are some very good reasons for setting out on the Munro trail; 1) If you enjoy hillwalking then what better motivation can you have to get those boots on and get onto the hills. Never again will you be asking yourself "where should I go today?". Just head for a Munro.

The Open Window
BY SAKI (H. H. Munro) (1870-1916)
"My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel," said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; "in the meantime you must try and put up with me."
Framton Nuttel endeavored to say the correct something which should duly Hatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing
"I know how it will be," his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; "you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice."
Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction came into the nice division.
"Do you know many of the people round here?" asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Saki (1870-1916) - Pseudonym of Hector Hugh Munro Scottish-born writer whose stories satirize the Edwardian social scene not so seldom in macabre and cruel light. Munro's columns and short stories were published under the pen name 'Saki', who was the cupbearer in The Rabaoyat of Omar Khayyam , an ancient Persian poem. Saki's stories were full of witty sayings - such as "The cook was a good cook, as cooks go; and as cooks go she went." - and included coded references to homosexuality. "A little inaccuracy sometimes saves tons of explanations." (from The Square Egg Hector Hugh Munro was born in Akyab, Burma (now Myamar) as the son of Charles Augustus Munro, an inspector-general for the Burma police. Her mother, the former Mary Frances Mercer, died in 1872 - she was killed by a runaway cow in an English country lane. Munro was brought up in England with his brother and sister by a pair of strict and awful aunts who used frequently the birch and whip. Munro was educated at Pencarwick School in Exmoth and the Bedford Grammar School. From 1887 he traveled with his family in France, Germany and Switzerland. In 1891 his father settled in Devon where he worked as a teacher. In 1893 Munro joined the Burma police. He returned to England three years later and started his career as a journalist, writing for Westminster Gazette In 1900 appeared Munro's first book, THE RISE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE, a historical study modelled upon

Sredni Vashtar
BY SAKI (H. H. MUNRO)
Conradin was ten years old, and the doctor had pronounced his professional opinion that the boy would not live another five years. The doctor was silky and effete, and counted for little, but his opinion was endorsed by Mrs. De Ropp, who counted for nearly everything. Mrs. De Ropp was Conradin's cousin and guardian, and in his eyes she represented those three-fifths of the world that are necessary and disagreeable and real; the other two-fifths, in perpetual antagonism to the foregoing, were summed up in himself and his imagination. One of these days Conradin supposed he would succumb to the mastering pressure of wearisome necessary things-such as illnesses and coddling restrictions and drawn-out dulness. Without his imagination, which was rampant under the spur of loneliness, he would have succumbed long ago.
Mrs. De Ropp would never, in her honestest moments, have confessed to herself that she disliked Conradin, though she might have been dimly aware that thwarting him ``for his good'' was a duty which she did not find particularly irksome. Conradin hated her with a desperate sincerity which he was perfectly able to mask. Such few pleasures as he could contrive for himself gained an added relish from the likelihood that they would be displeasing to his guardian, and from the realm of his imagination she was locked out-an unclean thing, which should find no entrance.
The Houdan hen was never drawn into the cult of Sredni Vashtar. Conradin had long ago settled that she was an Anabaptist. He did not pretend to have the remotest knowledge as to what an Anabaptist was, but he privately hoped that it was dashing and not very respectable. Mrs. De Ropp was the ground plan on which he based and detested all respectability.

Saki (H.H. Munro) (1870-1916)
Commentary by Karen Bernardo Hector Hugh Munro more commonly known as Saki was born in Akyab, Burma. This was during the period when Burma, like India proper, was occupied by the British, and thus Munro was considered a British citizen despite the location of his birth. Munro’s father was an officer in the Burma police. However, apparently feeling that England was a better place to raise children than Burma, Munro’s father left his three children in the care of his mother and two sisters (the children’s grandmother and aunts) back in Devon, England. Hector Munro and his two siblings were all somewhat sickly children, and out of concern for their health they were tutored at home for much of their childhoods. This focus on home may have contributed to a similar concentration in the drawing-room situations Munro would later describe in his stories. When Hector had completed his schooling, he went to Burma where his father had arranged for him to join the military police. The climate did not agree with him, and after only a year at his new post, he fell ill with a severe case of malaria and had to return home. Back in England he began writing political satires, which were so entertaining that he had no trouble getting them published in the Westminster Gazette . He chose to publish his fiction (as opposed to his journalistic and non-fiction efforts) under the name of Saki, a pseudonym which was taken from the cup-bearer in
