IMPACT OF TELEVISED VIOLENCE
  • John P. Murray, Ph.D

  • School of Family Studies and Human Services
  • Kansas State University Questions about the effects of television violence have existed since the earliest days of this medium. Indeed, the first expression of formal concern can be found in Congressional hearings in the early 1950s. For example, the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency held a series of hearings during 1954-55 on the impact of television programs on juvenile crime. These hearings set the stage for continuing congressional investigations by this committee and others in the House and Senate from the 1950s to the present. These early congressional inquiries were focused on what we did not know about television and violence because social scientists were slow to respond to concerns about this medium of popular entertainment. Although there was a body of research on movies and comic books, these were quite different forms of media and different effects might be expected. Still, prominent social scientists such as developmental psychologist Eleanor Maccoby and sociologist Paul Lazarsfeld testified at the 1954-55 hearings that, although more research was needed, there were important reasons for concern about televised violence (Lazarsfeld, 1955; Maccoby, 1954; United States Congress, Senate Committee on the Judiciary, 1955a; 1955b; 1965a; 1965b; 1966). And yet, despite decades of research, there is a perception that the research evidence on TV violence is unclear or contradictory. This perception is incorrect and this review will address the following issues: What do we know about the impact of television violence? What are some of the major research findings that form the basis for concern? Without belaboring prior reviews, the main issues revolve around the extent of exposure to violence and the correlational, experimental and field studies that demonstrate the effects of this viewing on the attitudes and behavior of children and adults.

    http://www.orgs.muohio.edu/anthologies/school/Murray,John.htm
Lessons in English Literature. With a short dictionary of British, Irish, and American authors Preface The title of this little volume scarcely conveys an adequate idea of the wide range of subjects discussed between its covers. The work is divided into four Books. Book I. gives a brief history of the English Language, a birds-eye view of its composition and a history of English Literature from Caedmon to Chaucer. Book II. covers the English Literature of Great Britain from Chaucer to the present time. Book IV. embraces in brief a the English Literature of America, and ends with a Short Dictionary of authors. Literature takes a color from the times in which it is produced. It is best studied in connection with history. I have omitted long extracts. In a work of this nature they serve no good purpose. The whole should never be judged by a part. How silly and illogical it is to represent Julius Caesar or Evangeline by two or three pages! The quotations I have scattered here and there are so many gems to be fixed in the mind as an exercise of taste and memory. My book has grown by degrees during the last ten years.

    MURRAY, JOHN (CHEMIST)
MURRAY, JOHN engeance for the ill-treatment of his wife; but the feud of the lamiltons with the regent is the most reasonable explanation. As he rode through Linlithgow Murray was shot on the 2ist of anuary 1570 from a window by Hamilton, who had made careful sreparation for the murder and his own escape. He was buried n the south aisle of St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, amid general mourning. Knox preached the sermon and Buchanan furnished he epitaph, both panegyrics. The elder of his two daughters, Slizabeth, married James Stuart (d. 1592), son of James, ist ord Doune, who succeeded to the earldom of Murray in right of his wife. The materials for the life of Murray are found in the records and documents of the time, prominent among which are the various Calendars of State Papers. Mention must also be made of the many )ooks which treat of Mary, Queen of Scots, and of the histories of he time—especially J. A. Froude, History of England, and Andrew -.ang, History of Scotland. :- MURRAY, JOHN, the name for several generations of a great irm of London publishers, founded by John McMurray (1745-1793)> a native of Edinburgh and a retired lieutenant of marines, who in 1768 bought the book business of William Sandby in Fleet Street, and, dropping the Scottish prefix, called himself John Murray. He was one of the twenty original proprietors of the Morning Chronicle, and started the monthly English Review (1783-1796). Among his publications were Mitford's 'reece, Langhorne's Plutarch's Lives, and the first part of Isaac DTsraeli's Curiosities of Literature. He died on the 6th of November 1793.

to the Highlands an immediate necessity, in which the prince was compelled to acquiesce; his resentment was such that he gave ear to groundless suggestions that Murray was a traitor, which the latter’s failure to capture his brother’s stronghold of Blair Castle did nothing to refute. Murray escaped to the continent in December 1746, and was graciously received in Rome by the Old Pretender, who granted him a pension; but in the following year when he went to Paris Charles Edward refused to see him. Lord George lived at various places abroad until his death, which occurred at Medemblik in Holland on the 11th of October 1760. He married ill 1728 Amelia, daughter and heiress of James Murray of Strowan and Glencarse, by whom he had three sons and two daughters. His eldest son John became 3rd duke of Atholl in 1764; the two younger sons became lieutenant-general and vice-admiral respectively in the British service.
