Murray, John 1741-1815, founder of the Universalist denomination in America, b. England. He was excommunicated by the Methodists after he had openly accepted Universalism as taught by James Relly (see Universalist Church of America ). Murray emigrated to America in 1770 where, after traveling as a Universalist preacher for four years in New Jersey, New York, and New England, he settled in Gloucester, Mass. He continued his preaching there and in nearby centers. In 1775, General Washington announced Murray's appointment as chaplain to the Rhode Island troops. He served as pastor of the newly organized Independent Church of Christ (1779) at Gloucester until he was called to the pastorate of the Universalist Society of Boston in 1793.

Murray, John, 2d marquess and 1st duke of Atholl 1660-1724, Scottish nobleman; son of the 2d earl and 1st marquess. A supporter of William III, he held high government posts in Scotland and was created duke in 1703. He successfully weathered a plot against him by Simon Fraser, Baron Lovat , and James Douglas, 2d duke of Queensberry . A vigorous opponent of the union (1707) of England and Scotland, he was suspected of Jacobite leanings. Nonetheless, he supported the accession (1714) of George I (although he lost office) and remained loyal to the government during the Jacobite uprising of 1715.

Murray, John, son of John Murray, was born about 1691, in Scotland; emigrated to the Province of Pennsylvania in 1732 in company with his brother and other friends. On the 10 th of January, 1737, he obtained a land warrant from the proprietaries of Pennsylvania, and on the "14 th of ye 9 th month," 1739, had the same located upon two hundred acres and twelve perches of land adjoining the northwest side of "Swahatawro" (Swatara) creek, then in Hanover township, Lancaster county, Pa. Adam Read, an early settler and prominent in frontier times, held an adjoining tract on the north by improvement. On the 1 st of March, 1744, John Murray obtained another warrant, which was located, about a year afterwards, east of the other tract, and between it and land of James Stewart. This latter tract is now within the limits of Lebanon county, the former, the homestead, being within the present bounds of Dauphin county, a short distance from Dixon’s Ford on the Swatara. The date of death or name of John Murray’s wife we have been unable to gather. Transcribed by: Lynne Ranieri From page 169

He also carried on a butchering business and attended the Harrisburg markets. Later he removed to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he died in 1851, having at different periods had charge of the "Golden Sheaf," "American House," and "Black Bear" hotels. After his death his wife continued the hotel for some time, and subsequently removed to Allegheny City, and from there to Manchester, and finally died at Allegheny City in 1855. I am looking for the family of my gggrandfather John Randolph Murray born c.1810 in Scotland. He was the son of a Scottish aristocrat who owned an estate in Ireland c. 1830's. John was disowned in 1830 for marrying an Irish girl. He and his wife Jane (Harvesting) lived in Emyvale, Co. Monaghan before emigrating to Canada in 1832 with his two sons Christopher, age 2 and Harold age 6 mths (who died on voyage).
I have no idea where he originated from in Scotland but I am following a lead in regards to my gggrandfather's middle name "Randolph". I am wondering if this was a family name. I have found a record of a William Murray marrying an Isabel Randolph in the year 1317 in Roxburgh, Scotland. I know this is really playing "a wild card" but I have to try every avenue. If any Murray out there thinks there may be a connection to their family, I would be very grateful to hear from them. Thanks, Mary
