Peirce) [Home Online-Artikel Links zu anderen Web-Sites Literatur Die semiotische Natur des Computers .although computers are machines, they are not ordinary machines, assembled with bolts and screws. They are symbolic machines constructed and controlled by means of signs The interface of the systems is an obvious example of a computer-based sign, but underneath the interface, in the intestines of the system, we also find signs. The system itself is specified by a program text (a sign since it stands for the set of possible program executions to the programmer). The actual execution involves a compiler or interpreter that directly or indirectly controls the computer by means of the program text, and since the compiler is based on a text standing for the set of permissible program texts, a part of the compiler is a meta-sign that in some versions very much resembles ordinary grammar. (Andersen 1993, 16) A computer system can be seen as a complex network of signs, and every level contains aspects that can be treated semiotically. Since this is the case, semiotics can be the basis of a humanistic computer science playing a role similar to that played by mathematics in standard computer science. The semiotic approach will be complementary, not antagonistic, to the natural science variant, since issues that can be treated systematically in one are typically outside the range of the other. For example, calculations of time and space requirements of algorithms are best done using mathematics, whereas assessments of ease of use of interfaces require a semiotic analysis of meanings expressed by the interface and the users' work language. (Andersen 1993, 17)

This is reflected in the transition from sequence to configuration, from linearity to non-linearity, from centralism to distributed variable centers, from hierarchy to non-hierarchic methods, from homogeneity to heterogeneity, from permanence to transitoriness, etc. In the new context of human interconnection, means other than those used in literate communication emerge as better adapted to the goals of human activity. The visual is already dominant. Multimedia is in the process of reshaping human interaction. Computational Design is the theory and practice of design in and for the digital age. Through Computational Design, of all that is technically possibleand we see a lot of products seeking acceptance in the marketplaceonly what is truly legitimate becomes necessary. Pro-Action vs. Re-Action My claim in 1988 (on the occasion of a lecture presented at Ohio State University where I served as the Eminent Scholar in Art and Design Technology, a chair endowed by the State of Ohio) was that anticipation lies at the foundation of the entire cognitive activity of the human being. Moreover, through anticipation, we humans gain insight into what keeps our world together as a coherent whole whose future states stand in correlation to the present state as minds grasp it. Minds exist only in relation to other minds; they are instantiations of co-relations. For over 300 years since Descartes' major elaborations (1637, 1644) and Newton's Principia (1687) science has advanced in understanding what for all practical purposes came to be known as the reactive modality . Causality is experienced in the reactive model of the universe, to the detriment of any pro-active manifestations of phenomena not reducible to the cause-and-effect chain or describable in the vocabulary of determinism. It is important to understand that what is at issue here is not some silly semantic game, but rather a pragmatic horizon: Are human actions (through which individuals and groups identify themselves, i.e., self-constitute, cf.
