  • Translation from the Japanese of "Toshi wo Horobose," first serialized in the periodical Kankyo Hakai, reprinted in 1992 in book form by the Japan Communal Society Association, and republished as a commercially available book in 1994 by Maijisha Publishing Co. This translation is of the earliest version, and does not reflect subsequent updates, additions, and changes by the author. Permission for posting on has been securied by the translator from all concerned parties. This translation is to be distributed freely throughout the world to anyone at all, and is not to be sold for commercial profit. Mr. Nakashima (born 1920) is a self-sufficient farmer in the hill country of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. He entered the Army in 1939, and was in Taiwan at the end of the war. In 1945 he returned to his family farm and began farming. In 1954 Mr. Nakashima began raising free-range chickens, and embarked on the long process of developing his method of producing "natural eggs," for which he is now well known in Japan. About 1975 he started studying the writings of the Edo Period thinker Ando Shoeki. He has also written a book entitled "Minomushi Kakumei Dokuritsu Noumin no Sho" (The Bagworm Revolution A Book for Independent Farmers). The author has also written and published extensively on free-range chicken farming. The order of Japanese personal names follows East Asian custom: surname followed by given name.

Others (Lyscos for one) takes into account how many /other/ pages point to the one returned by the search, i.e., the more "popular" pages will get a higher score. -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- Mike McDermott USM Library Reference michaelm@usm.maine.edu P.O. Japanese-Canadian Research Collection Special Collections Division, UBC Library Tsuneharu Gonnami, Asian Library, UBC, August 1996 I) Introduction 1) Background of the Collection After patiently listening to Mr. Sato’s long talk on the history of Japanese immigrants to Canada and the education of their offspring in B.C., Mr. Stuart-Stubbs gave his assurance to Mr. Sato that UBC Library would collect and preserve historical materials relating to Japanese-Canadians in its Special Collections Division, and on the spot he appointed me to serve from then on as the liaison between UBC Library and the Japanese communities all across Canada. I-2) Size and Nature of the Collection The papers of Yasutaro Yamaga are represented by a few files in this Collection (series LVI). Most of his papers, however, have been gathered into a separate collection, the Yasutaro Yamaga Papers (120 cm), which has its own inventory list19 (see below, II-2-2). Similarly, the Pitt Meadows Japanese Farmers’ Association Collection has its own inventory list20 (see below, II-2-3). I-3) Inventory List ist.18 The papers within each individual collection have been arranged into series such as correspondence, The collections have been listed alphabetically and can be found by series numbers or file numbers, and have their own inventory documents, diaries, clippings, etc. The majority of the manuscript materials are copies of items hand-written in the Japanese language. There are some materials in English, as indicated in the inventories. The Collection includes some taped interviews with Japanese Canadians pertaining to their experiences in Canada, and some transcriptions are also included.
