New Mexico's Albuquerque is located in Bernalillo County and it is the county seat. It lies southwest of Santa Fe along Interstate 25, on the banks of the Rio Grande River. Spanish settlement commenced in the early 1600s, but they vacated the area when Native Americans revolted against Spanish rule in 1680. Albuquerque of today was founded in 1706 and the city was named after New Spain's viceroy, the Duke of Alburquerque. It blossomed swiftly as an El Camino Real (King's Highway) stopping point between Santa Fe and Mexico City. Today Albuquerque, population 448,607, is New Mexico's largest city. It is a trade, high-tech manufacturing and transportation hub. Nearby Kirtland Air Force Base also contributes to the economy. The city is home to the University of New Mexico's main campus. Albuquerque's warm, dry weather attracts vacationers. Among many attractions is the 1793 Church of San Felipe de Neri in the historic Old Town district. Albuquerque is part of the Albuquerque, New Mexico

Jim Walther's Reality Check
On 23 February, 2000, I visited with Jim Walther, the Director of the National Atomic Museum, currently located on Kirtland Air Force Base. After hearing my ideas on the Transportation Academy , the Albuquerque Aerospace Museum, and Thunderbird Plaza, Jim gave me his candid observations.

- Too much local competition. The National Atomic Museum, one of the Congressionally approved museums, already has jets, bombers, and missiles. The newly formed Wheels Museum, next to the rail tracks downtown, plans on including airplanes. Andrew Homer's Proposals for Albuquerque's SHARED VISION Townhall There were 7 design teams of architects, business owners and citizens from the neighborhoods who focused on charette sites along the Central Avenue corridor for the East Gateway, Wyoming Blvd, Fairgrounds, Highland, UNM/Carlisle, Rio Grande/Atrisco, and Unser Blvd. My idea for the East Gateway is that since it's closest to the windy Tijeras Pass and is the highest elevation on Central Avenue, this area would be the most logical place for an eucalyptus urban forest to provide a windbreak.

Additional Albuquerque Attractions Albuquerque is an intriguing combination of old and new, where the glories of nature surround an exciting modern city. It was a once a frontier community and there is still plenty of evidence of this in the Old Town where shops and galleries are housed in historic adobe buildings, set among patios and winding paths. The area is considered to be Albuquerque's soul, at the hub of its history, culture, and community life. This is also a highly cosmopolitan city boasting diverse cultures and cuisines, pursuits, and panoramas. There are plenty of museums and galleries to visit if you want to stay in town, but a drive along the Crest National Scenic Byway to the summit of the Sandia Mountains is extremely picturesque, as is the breathtaking scenery found in places like the Petroglyph National Monument and Coronado State Monument. You can even walk along the cottonwood-lined river at the Rio Grande Nature Center, where two miles of trails wind through wooded areas to the sandy banks of the Rio Grande River.
