In an effort that was lead by Mayor Chavez , the former REI location, owned by American Properties, was made available and leased to the museum as another way to encourage tourist traffic in the Old Town corridor. "This museum is a part of New Mexico history," Mayor Chavez said. "This is America's only official museum resource for the history and science of atomic energy and I encouraged the relocation to make this heritage more accessible to the general public". The National Atomic Museum owned by the Department of Energy and operated by Sandia National Laboratories, has been closed to the general public since the September terrorist attacks. The museum plans to be open at the new location in time for the upcoming tourist season in early May. The museum was first opened in 1969 and chartered by Congress in 1991. Jim Long, President of American Properties, said that he was interested in working with Sandia National Laboratories and the National Atomic Museum Foundation to use the old REI building as a way to promote the culture and heritage of the State of New Mexico and feels that, with the addition of the National Atomic Museum, we will have created the strongest museum corridor in the state.

Pueblo Cultural Center The Pueblo people are settled in nineteen communities, some of which have been continuously inhabited since long before the discovery of America. Still retaining their ancient and largely secret ceremonial life, they welcome visitors from all over the world, and offer a glimpse of the proud heritage which they have kept alive for more than a thousand years. The Rio Grande Botanic Garden Rio Grande Botanic Garden displays include seasonal color exhibits and permanent conservatory collections. The conservatory collections exhibit Southwest Desert and Mediterranean climate plants. A PNM Butterfly Pavilion is open during the warm months. The garden also features a Children's Fantasy Garden.

National Atomic Museum Outreach Community Community Giving Education Partnerships Community Leadership ... Economic Impact National Atomic Museum The National Atomic Museum, operated for the Department of Energy by Sandia Labs, continues important educational outreach as well as historic preservation and presentation activities. Science in the Summer Each year the museum presents the "Science is Everywhere Summer Camp" program. This exciting event exposes kids to hands-on experiences with robots, rockets, the environment, engineering, and energy, all in a fun and exploratory fashion. This year, the museum will serve 200 kids, from 8 to 12 years of age. Science on the Road The National Atomic Museum is launching a mobile "Science and Math Outreach" program that will take educational materials to small towns and pueblos in New Mexico. Students in their communities across New Mexico will have a chance to benefit from the museum. Science over the Air The museum recently opened the first "ZOOMzone" in New Mexico, which is one of only 15 nationwide. ZOOMzone is a place for kids to explore science in the museum that is part of the public television program "Zoom" seen daily. Our ZOOMzone is open daily and features great experiments, video, and computers. Partners for our ZOOMzone include the University of New Mexico's Computer and Electrical Engineering Departments, WGBH-TV in Boston, and KNME-TV in Albuquerque, as well as our local schools.
