Albuquerque is a modern cosmopolitan city with old-world roots and historical charm. The triad of Indian, Spanish, and Anglo cultures have formed the unique heritage of modern day Albuquerque. Each of these cultures have left their mark on the local religion, art, music, architecture, customs, and traditions. The city rises 5,314 feet above sea level and encompasses nearly 100 square miles. It is bordered by the nearly 11,000 foot peaks of the Sandia Mountains to the east and by windswept mesas to the west. The nearly 600,000 inhabitants afford Albuquerque the population to support a large variety of shopping, dining, cultural, and entertainment options. Albuquerque has been listed as one of the best places to live in the United States by Newsweek Money, and Entrepreneur magazines. Founded in 1889, the University of New Mexico (UNM) occupies 600 acres along old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque. UNM offers a unique campus environment with a Spanish Pueblo Revival architectural theme. UNM represents a wide cross-section of cultures and backgrounds. In the fall of 2001, a total of 23,659 students were enrolled at the University of New Mexico. UNM employs 22,600 people statewide, including students and employees of University Hospital. Alumni number 100,000 worldwide and nearly half currently live in the state. Albuquerque is home to the

Beyond the bomb The National Atomic Museum has been located throughout its history on difficult-to-access Kirtland Air Force Base, but today's writer says the visitor-friendly location of the museum's temporary new home isn't all that has changed.
TODAY'S BYLINE
Kenny is the National Atomic Museum's director of public relations and marketing.
By Becky Kenny The nation's only congressionally chartered museum dedicated to nuclear energy is now, officially, totally "off-base." After 32 years of being behind security fences that made it difficult for the public to visit, the National Atomic Museum has moved from its historic location on Kirtland Air Force Base. It's now in Albuquerque's museum district near Old Town. The public gets its first view Saturday of what is an "interim museum," reopening eight months to the day after it was forced to close its doors to the public because of the terrorist attacks on the East Coast that tightened security at Kirtland.

Great places that renew the spirit and remind us why it's so wonderful to live here: A Spectacular Drive - The Turquoise Trail, Hwy. 14 from Santa Fe to I-40
You drive back into New Mexico history, along the Ortiz Mountains as the land stretches into breathtaking vistas. Ranches, old mining towns and geological curiosities of all kinds punctuate a drive that is well worth the extra 30 minutes it takes when you forsake I-25. Stop in Madrid and check out the galleries, great stores, and the hippies. Aren't we glad no one bought the town when it was for sale some years back? History whispers in the rough dirt streets and you catch your breath as you gaze out from this mesa across - Acoma's sacred land. Coronado thought he'd found one of the fabled seven cities of gold when he first saw it. "Too bad he was wrong," one mesa top tour guide opined. "We'd be doing things a lot differently up here." Try to see it on one of the feast days that are open to the public, when the main square fills with dancers and the mood is celebration. Be sure to go back down the steep, ancient footpath that for hundreds of years was the only access.

Albuquerque's unique combination of old and new dates back nearly 10,000 years, when Anasazi Indians first settled the region. You can see the ruins of the cliff-dwellings today. The railroad first stopped here in 1880, and Albuquerque's mild climate and beautiful scenery drew new residents to the old West. Now home to many popular attractions, the metropolis sits on the fabled Route 66, and remnants of that roadside culture are preserved in 50's-style diners, theme motels, and the KiMo Theater.
