and Hallelujah Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, on January 20, 1895, Eva Alberta Jessye started her academic career in the public schools of Coffeyville and Iola, Kansas. At age 13 she attended Western University in Quindaro, Kansas. She graduated from Western University in 1914 and went on to Langston University in Oklahoma where she received a lifetime certificate in teaching. Jessye taught in elementary schools in Taft, Haskell, and Muskogee, Oklahoma before she became a reporter and columnist for the Baltimore (Maryland) Afro-American in 1925. In 1926 she joined a choral group in New York called the Dixie Jubilee Singers. This group would eventually become the world-renowned Eva Jessye Choir. The choir performed spirituals, work songs, ballads, ragtime, jazz, and light opera in a variety of mediums, such as radio, film, and stage. They were regulars on the "Major Bowes Family Radio Hour" and the "General Motors Hour." In 1927 the Dixie Jubilee Singers worked in Harry A. Pollard's film, Uncle Tom's Cabin. The same year, Dr. Jessye compiled and published a critically acclaimed collection of songs titled My Spirituals . In 1929 King Vidor directed " Hallelujah ", the first musical motion picture with an all-Black cast. The film featured the Dixie Jubilee Singers with Jessye as choral director.

Commentary, Page 3 Alice Ruth Moore Dunbar-Nelson
Unfortunately, the rights sought by Adams and Murray were not included in the Constitution, and the effects of omitting them resonate throughout American history. Though she lived almost a century later than the previous two authors, I’ve included Alice Ruth Moore Dunbar-Nelson’s work in this lesson because it illustrates some of the main ideas presented by Adams and Murray. She also expands the perspective, referencing her lineage of slavery and a diverse ethnic heritage. As the textbook biography points out, this heritage gives her work a sensitivity toward race and nationality, as well as women’s roles. Dunbar-Nelson became an influential activist for a variety of women’s issues, particularly for women of color and adolescent girls, areas not addressed by previous activists like Adams and Murray. You will see the significance of ethnicity and race in “Tony’s Wife,” though the focus of this story remains on gender issues. Today’s readers are sometimes surprised by these characters. “Why didn’t she leave him?” and “I never would have put up with that!” are common responses for modern readers who may find it difficult to relate to this tragic heroine. After all, she’s not even given a name in the story. She’s completely devoid of identity outside her relationship to Tony. As you read the story, though, keep the time frame in mind and the social injustices that pervaded women’s lives in the late nineteenth century, particularly for immigrants and women of color. Women did not have property rights or equal access to formal education. These factors made it extremely difficult for a woman not born into wealth to achieve success or even earn a living on her own. You will need to consider the influence of these societal injustices on her life.

We cannot use complete genealogies here. In the interest of saving space, w e will just assume that "any information would be greatly appreciated!" Along these lines, I have also abbreviated and edited the queries for space. All dates are now in the format dd MMM yyyy. Also, I use the abbreviations "b." for born, "m." for married, "d." for died, and "bur." for buried. I cannot post pedigreesplease have a specific question that you are trying to have answered. If there is not a specific question, perhaps the Surname page will serve you well. Finally, please consider your personal security when submitting queries. I hesitate to list your personal physical addresses. I would rather that you correspond via email and decide for yourself whether someone answering your query is "OK" or not. UNFORTUNATELY, I GET SO MUCH JUNK EMAIL THAT "Minnehaha County" MUST BE IN YOUR SUBJECT LINE OR IT WILL BE VERY EASY TO INNOCENTLY, ACCIDENTALLY IGNORE IT, WHICH I DO NOT WANT TO DO!
