Lorraine Vivian Hansberry is born in Chicago, on May 19, the daughter of a prominent real estate broker and the niece of a Howard University professor of African history. The Hansberry family lives at 5330 S. Calumet Avenue on the South Side of Chicago. Hansberry begins school at Betsy Ross Elementary at 61st Street and Wabash Avenue. The Hansberry family moves to 6140 Rhodes Avenue, in an all-white neighborhood near the University of Chicago. Hostile residents attack their home. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Lorraine Vivian Hansberry was born May 19, 1930 in Chicago and raised in a middle-class family. When she was 7 or 8 her family moved to a restricted white neighborhood which was against the law at that time. The Hansberrys had to go to court in order to remain in their home which was vandalized on several occasions. Lorraine Hansberry attended the University of Wisconsin, studied at Roosevelt University, attended the New School for Social Research, and studied African Culture and History with W.E.B. DuBois at the Jefferson School for Social Sciences in New York. During that time she wrote for Paul Robeson's Freedom magazine and participated in liberal causes. In 1953 she married Robert Nemiroff, a white writer and activist; they were divorced in 1964. The production of her play, A Raisin in the Sun catapulted Hansberry into the forefront of the theatre world. She was named most promising playwright of the season by Variety's poll of New York Drama Critics. Upon receiving that year's Drama Desk Award, Lorraine Hansberry became the youngest person and the first African-American to win that distinguished honor. In 1961 the film version of the play, starring Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil and Ruby Dee opened; Hansberry won a special award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Screen Writer's Guild Award for her screenplay. A second television adaptation of the play aired in 1989 starring Danny Glover, Esther Rolle, and Kim Yancey.

    60. Interview With Ms. Sol
An Interview with Mr. Sol. By Robert J. Nemiroff Copyright © 1987 by Robert J. Nemiroff.Used with permission. Mornings just wouldn't be the same without him.
    http://solar-center.stanford.edu/interview/nemiroff.html
    A n I nterview with M r. S ol By Robert J. Nemiroff
Used with permission. Mornings just wouldn't be the same without him. He really does light up our life. But did we ever thank him, even once? No, never. We should consider ourselves lucky that he doesn't get overheated. Astronomy Magazine thus decided to thank that wonderful star of ours, Sol, for all those billions of years of free sunlight; tax free sunlight. We also thanked him for that really great gravitational field of his that keeps us from cavorting around the galaxy. To our surprise he granted us an exclusive interview. We found out that being a star isn't always sunshine. Astronomy Magazine : Mr. Sun, how did you become a star?
Sol, our Sun : Please, call me Sol. I answered an ad. "Galaxy Now Forming, Stars Needed." The ad made it look real easy. Just sit around, make hydrogen into helium. Have everyone look up to you. Have a career where you can really shine. And I always thought I had what it took to be a star, you know. I was young, I had great big clouds of hydrogen. The actual triggering event was the tragic death of a star right in our own neighborhood. This shocked me and a lot of other large young gas regions into several new stages of development. It totally changed our future. Ironically, many of us eventually decided we wanted to become stars ourselves.
