Stories never really end. They can go on and on. It's just that sometimes, at a certain point, one stops telling them.
Mary Norton, The Borrowers
Five Children and More: Edith Nesbit Etexts Author Edith Nesbit led an unconventional life as a prominent socialist and political activist in London. Though she also wrote for an adult audience, she is most remembered as a popular children's author.
Nesbit was born on August 15, 1858, in London, the youngest of six children. After her father died, the family moved to the continent, where she was educated in France and Germany; in 1872 the Nesbits returned to England. She married Hubert Bland in 1880 and had three children; she also adopted Bland's illegitimate children. Bland died in 1914; she later married Thomas Tucker, in 1917.
A founding member of the Fabian Society in the mid-1880s, she was a political activist, along with such other notable literary figures as H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw. Nesbit died on May 4, 1924, possibly from lung cancer, at Jesson St. Mary's in Kent, England.

    E[dith] Nesbit
Nesbit, E[dith] (1858-1924) Poet, Fabian, author of children's literature. Also known as Edith Nesbit Bland, N. published most of her work under the gender-hiding signature of "E. Nesbit."; with her husband, she also published under the alias "Fabian Bland." Nesbit was a prolific writer whose prodigious output allowed her to support her large, sprawling family. Known primarily as a writer of children's literature, N. also sought to be recognized as a serious poet in her lifetime. She may well have been regarded as such in the New Age , where she was an occasional contributor of poetry, mostly in the first two volumes (1907-8); she also wrote, in volume 1, an article about the "Anglo-Russian Alliance." A bright, striking woman who circulated in bohemian and Fabian circles, N. could leave quite an impression. Here's how Ada Elizabeth Jones Chesterton remembered her: [N.] helped to reverse the great tradition of children's literature inaugurated by Carroll, MacDonald and Kenneth Grahame, in turning away from their secondary worlds to the tough truths to be won from encounters with things-as-they-are, previously the province of adult novels. (xx) Briggs also credits N. with having invented the children's adventure story. Among N.'s best-known books are

Not Springtoo lavish of her bud and leaf
But Autumn, with sad eyes and brow austere,
When fields are bare, and woods are brown and sere,
And leaden skies weep their exhaustless grief.
Spring is so much too bright, since Spring is brief.
And in our hearts is Autumn all the year,
Least sad when the wide pastures are most drear,
And fields grieve most robbed of the last gold sheaf.
For when the plough goes down the brown wet field
A delicate doubtful throb of hope is ours
What if this coming Spring at last should yield
Joy, with her too profuse unasked-for flowers?
Not all our Springs of commonplace and pain
Have taught us now that Autumn hope is vain. Text from Sonnets of This Century
      Dead Leaves
Not Summer's crown of scent the red rose weaves,
Not hawthorn perfume blown o'er bloom-strewn grass,
Not violets' whispers as the children pass,
Nor new-mown hay, crisp scent of yellow sheaves,
Nor lilac perfume in the soft May eves,
Nor any scent that Springtime can amass

    The Victorian Sonnet
Much poetry of the Victorian period is no longer very highly esteemed, for reasons that seem apparent after reading a number of sonnetsa sentimental self-indulgence and what F. R. Leavis called an "inferiority, in rigour and force, of intellectual content." Yet, when looked at individually, the poems are often graceful and moving, and their worst, most conventional excesses seem no more ridiculous than the stock courtly love sequences of the 16th and 17th centuries. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), who wrote Sonnets from the Portuguese to her husband ( Robert Browning (1812-1889)), is probably the most genuinely popular (and critically maligned) sonneteer of this period. Other British Victorian writers included here are Thomas Hood Charles Tennyson Turner (1808-1879), and his more famous brother, Alfred, Lord Tennyson Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), best known for "Dover Beach," wrote several sonnets. George Meredith (1828-1909) wrote a lengthy sequence, Modern Love , about the ruin of his marriage. Although the sequence consisted of rhymed sixteen-line iambic pentameter poems, ever since the poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) praised these poems as sonnets (and Meredith used the term himself in Sonnet 30 ), they have been widely accepted as specimens of the form. In addition to Meredith and Swinburne, the late 19th century
