The Iona and Peter Opie Library of Children's Literature

The classic introduction to Shakespeare now in paperback!
The Best of Shakespeare
Retellings of 10 Classic Plays
E. NESBIT

with an Introduction by IONA OPIE and Afterword by PETER HUNT

The perfect introduction to Shakespeare's work
At the heart of any great work of literature is a story. William Shakespeare's plays are no exception. They tell the stories of kings and queens, of ghosts and witches, of romance and passion. But to get to the stories at the heart of the Bard's plays, the reader must first work through Shakespeare's language, a task often too demanding for younger readers (and for many adults). This new paperback edition brings ten of Shakespeare's greatest plays to life. E. Nesbit, the classic British children's author, shakes off the burdensome complexity of Shakespeare's language and tells the stories at the core of the plays with a generous sprinkle of wit and humor. Her graceful, vivid retellings, written in highly accessible and lucid prose, are the perfect introduction to Shakespeare's work. All of these major works are included in this anthology: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, As You Like It, The Winter's Tale

    White-curtained shone, and softly lighted:
    So, by the pear-tree, to my room
    Your ghost last night climbed uninvited. Your solid self, long leagues away,
    Deep in dull books, had hardly missed me;
    And yet you found this Romeo's way,
    And through the blossom climbed and kissed me. I watched the still and dewy lawn,
    The pear-tree boughs hung white above you;
    I listened to you till the dawn,
    And half forgot I did not love you. Oh, dear! what pretty things you said, What pearls of song you threaded for me! I did nottill your ghost had fled Remember how you always bore me! Imagine if you were given one wish everyday. And you can wish for absolutely anything. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? What would you wish for? I’m sure I would have wished for plenty of chocolates and books! But everyday? No way! Sometimes we just know what we would probably wish for, but when we are actually faced with such a situation we can’t think of anything good. Or sometimes, what we wish for can turn out to be completely different from what we expected. ‘Five children and It’ is a book in which five kids experience a similar dilemma.
    ‘Five children and It’ is a book written by E. Nesbit, better known for her book ‘The Railway Children’. It was first published sometime in 1902, but don’t despair, the book is not at all boring. In fact I found it utterly delightful, and charming. Although E.Nesbit is a children’s writer, I honestly feel that anyone can enjoy this book.
    The story if about five children, four of whom are the main characters, while the fifth is their baby brother, who also features prominently in the book.
