Newcomb, Simon [n OO u m, ny OO
    Pronunciation Key
Newcomb, Simon , American astronomer, b. Nova Scotia, grad. Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard, 1858. Living in the United States from 1853, he was appointed (1857) a computer on the American Nautical Almanac American Journal of Mathematics. Newcomb participated in several eclipse expeditions and in 1882 went to the Cape of Good Hope to observe the transit of Venus. The record of many of his researches was published in the Astronomical Papers of the American Ephemeris, a series that he established in 1879. His investigations and computations of the orbits of six planets resulted in his tables of the planetary system, which were almost universally adopted by the observatories of the world. Newcomb urged the use of a common system of constants and fundamental stars by astronomers of all nations. A subject to which he devoted many years of study was the theory of the moon's motion. From the formulas he established it was possible to construct accurate lunar tables. His writings include a valuable early paper, On the Secular Variations and Mutual Relations of the Orbits of the Asteroids (1860) and On the Motion of Hyperion See his Reminiscences of an Astronomer (1903); study by L. M. Dunphy (1956).

Bibliography Newcomb Home Page Another Newcomb Home Page The name of NEWCOMB is of ancient origin. Etymologists are not agreed as to the word's ultimate derivation. Some say it comes from the Anglo-Saxon NEWE, meaning 'new', and COMB, meaning a valley, which, if correct, indicates that NEWCOMB is a place name (one derived from a place of habitation). Other writers, however, assert that the surname was originally NEWCOME or NEWCOMEN and that it meant "a stranger, a newcomer." In the United States the name is now almost invariably spelled NEWCOMB; whereas, in Canada, the more common form is NEWCOMBE. A few of the other variant spellings the name has adopted in the course of its long and honorable history are Newcom, Newcomen, Neucomen, Neucome, Newcome, Neucum, Nuecom, Nucumb, Neukomb, Newkomb, Neucombe, Neucomb, Newcum, and Newkombe. According to extant records, the earliest ancestors of the family lived in Lincolnshire, England. Here, at Saltsfletby, a Hugh Newcomen or Newcome was flourishing during the reign of Richard Coeur de Lion (1189-1199). The present Saltfletby (or Saltfleetby) branch of the family is, therefore, over seven hundred years old.

The earliest known report of this curious firstdigit phenomenon was madeby the astronomer and mathematician Simon Newcomb (1835–1909).

Recently on MathTrek: Prime Listening 6/20/98 Coins, Art, and Math in North Bay 6/13/98 World's Fastest Man 6/6/98 June First Digits T ake a look at a newspaper page listing stock market prices. You might think that each of the numbers from 1 to 9 would occur equally often among the first digits of all the listed prices. Instead, however, you're very likely to find that numbers starting with 1 come up more often than numbers starting with 2, numbers starting with 2 come up more often than numbers starting with 3, and so on. In fact, 1 comes up about 30 percent of the time—much greater than the expected 11 percent. At the other end, the digit 9 occurs only about 5 percent of the time. The earliest known report of this curious first-digit phenomenon was made by the astronomer and mathematician Simon Newcomb (1835–1909). He observed that the pages of heavily used books of logarithms were grimier at the beginning than at the end, suggesting that fellow scientists tended to look up smaller numbers more often than larger ones. In a brief article in the American Journal of Mathematics in 1881, Newcomb conjectured that the occurrence of first digits follows a particular probability distribution.
