A NOTE ON ROSS NICHOLS WORK ON WITCHCRAFT TODAY Although the publication of The History and Practice of Magic marked the end of the collaboration between Ross and Kirkup, it was followed at once by an intensification of an even more significant literary collaboration between himself and Gerald Gardner. Ross was to help Gardner with his first work of non-fiction on witchcraft. The publisher was to be Riders perhaps thanks to Gerald Yorke, known to both Gardner and Ross who worked for Riders. It was originally titled New Light on Witchcraft, but was re-titled

Home Brief Biography Chronology Reminiscences ... Archive Articles Ross Nichols NUINN
A Brief Biography Nuinn outside his hut at Spielplatz-1930's Four books of his poetry and prose were published between 1941 and 1947, and one of his best essays appears in The Cosmic Shape , published in 1946, which deals with the power of myth and the value of seasonal celebration. The essay concludes with a Manifesto designed to stimulate the use of myth amongst poets, co-signed with the poet James Kirkup. 5-acre door In 1949, Ross became assistant editor of The Occult Observer, History and Practice of Magic Witchcraft Today, published in 1954. That same year, Ross joined the Ancient Druid Order that Gardner had joined about a decade previously. Ross was a member of the ADO for ten years, becoming its Chairman and lecturing on Druidism in London and once in Dublin. During this time he worked on a major book During the last decade of his life, Ross succeeded in radically changing the practice of modern Druidism, shifting its focus from Universalism to Celtic sources. In addition he introduced the practice of observing all eight festivals of the Pagan Year within modern Druidry, and the three grades of Bard, Ovate and Druid, based on classical accounts. In the last years of his life he wrote The Book of Druidry. He was an accomplished poet and artist, and travelled widely, feeling particularly drawn to Egypt. His legacy is yet to be fully appreciated, and the Order that he founded has grown to become the largest Druid grouping in the world. It is arguable that he and Gardner can be considered the Founding Fathers of modern Paganism.

    Book Recommendations
Here's a list of some of the better books on Druidry and two books to definitely avoid. The two books at the bottom by Douglas Monroe are found in almost every bookstore and are very popular. However, they are very offensive. Be warned. Now on with the good books!
    Recommended Books
    Berresford Ellis, Peter The Druids
ISBN: 0-80284-158-9 The best historical book available on the ancient Druids. A must read for anyone wanting to research what the Druids were really like back then.

Blamires, Steve Glamoury: Magic of the Celtic Green World ISBN: 1-56718-069-8
Fascinating book with sections on the major Celtic Gods and Goddesses. My favorite section, however, is the end of the book which focuses on the 4 Celtic fire festivals. Mr. Blamires details very elaborate rituals for each of these with extensive histories of each festival. Excellent! Can't believe it is a Llewellyn book! Even ADF recommends it.
