    1811 CENSUS FOR MOSSLEY
This a rare surviving copy of an 1811 Census for Mossley, which I have been given permission to transcribe. Unlike the preceeding one for Ashton, the Mossley Census does not provide even approximate addresses, which is a great pity. Again the enumerator was given four columns to indicate whether the families were involved in farming, manufacturing, handicrafts or other trades. Manufacturing would have been mostly cotton spinning and handicrafts would likely have been hand loom weaving.

Keith made the most of his many and diverse talents and, uniquely, helped so many other people to do the same with theirs. We miss him deeply. John Hall, Eversheds
In memory of Professor Keith Short. The partners and staff in the Education Team of Eversheds remember Professor Keith Short, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The Nottingham Trent University, with great respect and affection. He was a champion of the ideals of higher education and a true professional. We send to Keith's family our deepest sympathy on the occasion of their loss. John Hall is particularly sorry not to be able to attend the memorial service on Wednesday, but Keith's family will be very much in his thoughts then. Dr Chris Lewis
I was shocked and greatly saddened to hear of Professor Short's untimely death. I had the opportunity to work with him on many validation visits to partners both in the UK and abroad. I find it very difficult to accept the fact that he is gone. His death leaves a great gap in the University which will be very difficult to fill. My deepest sympathies to his wife and son and any other family members.

    Social History
    THE END OF SOCIAL HISTORY?
Patrick Joyce This exchange will be especially necessary if it can be shown that contemporary history, in this case social history, is itself in fact the offspring of modernity. This is the argument made here. A post modern view would identify modernity as a normative project. If social history is the child of modernity, then it is seen to be part of this project, not innocently naming the world but creating it in its own political and intellectual image. If this is so, or even if it can be entertained at all, it follows that historians need to engage with contemporary debates, for these entail reflection on the very founding propositions, and the history, of their discipline itself. From this perspective, the 'discontents' of social [1]Raphael Samuel, 'Reading the igns, part I', History Workshop Journal , xxxi (Autumn 1991), 231-4; see also 'Reading the signs, part II", History Workshop Journal , XXXII (Spring 1992). [end of page 73] history are those of a modernity at last coming to reflect upon itself.[2]If social history comes to be seen as the outcome of the project of modernity then this may be the signal of its end. Once innocence is lost it cannot be regained. However, while marking an end, a self-reflective and historicized understanding of 'socialhistory' may point beyond this end, to a reconfigured social history, to something new. I The importance of these various foundations has been registered in Eley and Nield's forthcoming account of the challenge of post modernism and the'linguistic turn'to social history. The initial form of this account is a conference paper on class, given in 1993, and it is to this I refer in what follows.[4] This positive and constructive engagement with post modernism is doubly welcome, coming as it does from two historians who have been so important in guiding the development of social history, in the form of the journal
