    The People have a right to the Truth as they have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The function of the novelist . . . is to comment upon life as he sees it. No art that is not in the end understood by the People can live or ever did live a single generation. I never truckled; I never took off the hat to Fashion and held it out for pennies. By God, I told them the truth.

    Source: Penn Manuscripts Like Crane, Frank Norris had a short life but it was rich in creative writing. The overriding theme in Norris' fiction is the impact of industrialization on peaceful agricultural communities and the consequent chaos in the lives of people who lived in these communities. His most glaring metaphor is that of the tentacles of the railway tracks spreading and choking the countryside in the appropriately titled book The Octopus . The spirit of the turn-of-the-century San Francisco is impressively captured in McTeague . Its theme, that of a powerful man failing against unexpected adversity, typifies the thrust of the best of Naturalistic writing.     "Kathleen [Thompson] Norris, (1880-1966), his wife," was a popular novelist. " Family Gathering (1959) is an informal autobiography." from Ann Douglas, Terrible Honesty: Mongrel Manhattan in the 1920s (New York: Noonday Press/Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 1995), 533: "Kathleen Norris was the most interesting novelist of feminine and matriarchal sentimentalist essentialism in the 1910s and 1920s; vastly popular, with a curious literary style that seems to owe a good deal to Henry James, she developed the themes that would dominate the soaps of early radio, aroused the ire (and perhaps envy) of Dorothy Parker, was adored by Alexander Wollcott (always a fan of the matriarch), and took acre of Elinor Wylie’s stepchildren (they were related by marriage; forgotten today, she is well worth in-depth study. Of particular interest are her novels Josselyn’s Wife (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1918), in which the heroine is a potent emblem of “wizardry”;

His mother Gertrude Doggett, was a promising young actress who traded in her stage life for domesticity. Her love for literature was passed on to Frank Norris, the eldest of three sons. The Norris' moved West to San Francisco when Frank was fourteen and many of his later works of fiction were focused on California. Their prosperity allowed him to spend two years at an art school in Paris, he then spent four years at University of California and continued his studies at Harvard University.
