A Case for Lombroso
By Frank Norris
Haec fabula docet and all the rest. One day, when she was about twenty-one or twenty-two, she heard Stayne's name for the first time. Someone was telling someone else a story in which Stayne had shone with particular brilliancy, had done a thing especially generous, had sacrificed himself and concealed the fact. A little after Miss Hromada heard his name again, and heard it coupled with extravagant praise. Next she saw a picture of him, and his face pleased her. He was pointed out to her on the deck of a yacht, and it pleased her all the more. After this a mutual friend, who knew them both, told her that Stayne was in love with her and spent his nights in devising ways and means to meet her. Then at last they met. Cresencia came away from that meeting in a state of mystic exaltation, such as we are told sometimes comes upon nuns before the Stations of the Cross. As for young Stayne, he filled himself a pipe in our room and said to me: "Ever met that Miss Hromada? Stunning girl and clever as they make 'em. I'm going to work it to get a bid to their place during the tournamant." He got his bid right enough about a month later, but in the meanwhile Things had happened. A very proud girl, such as Cresencia, rarely falls in love with any man, but when she does it is with a proud disregard of reticence and restraint that is splendid to see. Cresencia was too proud even to try to conceal her affection for young Stayne. In ten days she had all San Francisco, from Pacific Heights to Russian Hill, talking. On the eleventh San Francisco had them engaged. Next came the tournament and the house party at the Hromadas' place that was to last a week.

Frank Norris by Ken Dvorak Born March 5,1870 in Chicago, Norris and his family moved to San Franciso in 1884. Rejecting the opportunity to enter his fathers business, he studied art in Paris during 1887-9. Returning to the U.S. Norris attended The University of California but withdrew prior to completing his degree. He transferred to Harvard University where he began writing the prototypes for "McTeague" and "Vandover and the Brute."; In 1896 Norris journeyed to South Africa where he authored a number of travel essays. Later in the year he returned to San Francisco and became a writer and editorial assistant for "The Wave." During this time he completes the manuscript for "McTeague", a dark depiction of the effect of greed on a married couple. This work was published in 1899 and marked the Norris's affiliation with the a type of writing known as " naturalism ." Naturalism for a writer such as Norris provided an avenue in which he described his characters motivations as determined by biological and environmental determinism. Norris' other major project was "The Epic of the Wheat." Conceived as a trilogy the initial volume, "The Octopus" (1899) denounces the monopolistic practices of the railroad in the distribution of food. "The Pit" (1903) details the mechanisms of commodity speculation. Norris' death from peritonitis on October 25,1902 prevented the writing of "The Wolf" envisioned by the author as the concluding installment to his work.

Norris, Frank (Benjamin Franklin Norris), 1870-1902, American novelist, b. Chicago. After studying in Paris, at the Univ. of California (1890-94), and Harvard, he wrote McTeague (1899), a proletarian novel influenced by the experimental naturalism The Octopus (1901), depicting the brutal struggle between the wheat farmers and the railroad, and The Pit (1903), dealing with speculation on the Chicago grain market. Norris spent several years as a war correspondent in South Africa (1895-96) and Cuba (1898). The Responsibilities of the Novelist (1903), a collection of essays, contains his idealistic views on the role of the writer. See study by B. Hochman (1988).

For readers interested in the work and life of Frank Norris, the interpretive situation is an interesting and sophisticated one. Norris has long enjoyed ample and painstaking attention from literary critics and textual scholars whose efforts have resulted in a journal devoted to Frank Norris studies, more than a dozen critical books and three dozen dissertations, several book-length bibliographies of both his work and of scholarly works about him, and a thoroughly edited and annotated collection of his letters. However, not since the publication of Franklin Walker's 1932 Frank Norris: A Biography has there been an English language, book-length biographical study of the man behind American Naturalism. While Walker's book provides the backbone for any investigation of Norris, it has long needed updating. Scholars such as Joseph R. McElrath, Jr., William B. Dillingham, James B. Stronks, and Richard Allan Davison are continuously adding to and revising biographical data from Norris's life: however, their discoveries remain scattered through the more than two dozen issues of Frank Norris Studies and not collected anywhere.
