The following is a history of the buildings and businesses that have stood over the past two centuries on the properties north of Drummer Lane on the west side of Main Street in Vineyard Haven, Mass. This is an unfinished draft! Do you have any memories of any of the other people, places, businesses or events mentioned here? Or do you have corrections, additions, or suggestions? Please contact

The great 1883 fire was stopped from spreading further north by a northerly breeze and by narrow Drummer Lane. According to family legend, this lane was named after Dr. William Leach's horse. (See Site #8 for more about Dr. Leach, who lived at the top of Drummer Lane.) Because they were spared from the blaze, the houses north of Drummer Lane predate 1883, some by more than a century. The history of these old homes has been published in earlier works, including Jim Norton's excellent book, " Walking in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts

Germanic Lineage Register Volume 18, #4; Volume 19
German Research Association
As published in The German Connection
Each of the following listings shows the direct ancestral lineage through the male line of one individual with a Germanic surname. Each direct line is of the format: Surname, [submitter number], (1) given name, (birth-death dates), place of birth, marriage, death or residence (as indicated by b, m ,d, or res), surname of wife; (2) given name of father of (1), (birth-death dates), place of b, m, d, or res, surname of spouse; (3) given name of father of (2). . . etc.
If the wife has a Germanic surname it may be followed as a separate direct line. An asterisk ( ) indicates an immigrant. A question mark (?) indicates information not known. Surnames are not repeated within one direct line unless there is a spelling or name change. Submitters would like to correspond with those sharing their lines or those who would like more information.
When the listings were printed in The German Connection, umlauts were used. For web use all umlauted vowels have been changed to the vowel plus e. Umlauted a as ae ; umlauted o as oe ; and umlauted u as ue. Additionally, any eszett appears as ss. To find a name with any search program, you must spell it exactly as spelled in this file.

Calvary Cemetery is located on the north side of Springfield and adjoins Oak Ridge Cemetery although neither is accessible from the other. Both are two of the largest cemeteries in Sangamon County. Calvary is owned and maintained by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield.
Originally the cemetery started out as a burial place for German and Irish Catholics but today is non-denominational. Gayle Swoik has recorded some of the inscriptions in her search for her ancestors and is sharing them with us. In speaking with the groundskeepers, Gayle was told that most of the records before 1900 were destroyed or damaged in a fire and that those after 1900 are hard to come by.
So in her quest to find her families she decided to take along a tape recorder and record some stones. These are the result. She intends to record more of these as time and the weather permits and share them with us. This is a huge cemetery and will take considerable time, so she has decided to go with the older part of the cemetery only with burials in the 1800's (some 1900's inc if on same stone). I do not have a history of the cemetery, but note that the first Catholic Church in Springfield was in 1844, if one can go by that date, we would assume that the first burials probably were around that time era, too. If anyone has a history of this cemetery, I would appreciate your sharing it with us.

    Woodlawn Cemetery
Woodlawn is in the heart of the very friendly small town of DeRidder, LA. It belongs to the town but has an advisory board to help keep things running smoothly. There are many large, old trees and lots of shrubbery. There are security lights along the driveway which circles the heart of the cemetery. Water faucets are provided to water the grass and/or plants which individuals may choose to plant and care for. The young business women of deridder have installed a meditating area in the baby garden which is located in the north-east corner of Woodlawn. Not to pick out any particular area, but Esther Terry has arranged a lovely place to sit and relax and as she says, visit her loved one. This is a very large cemetery with over 1400 tombstones with names, and a great many vandalized and/or unmarked graves. If any names were missed, we deeply regret it and would be more than happy to make corrections and additions. Some of the tombstones are inscribed in spanish and/or greek. These tombstones we have copied the best we can. Information collected by Roberta B. Doty and Evelyn E. Cole, completed in 1992.
