NERO Network for Education and Research in Oregon NorthWestNet - The Cost to Oregon of Missed Opportunity In 1984-1985 NorthWestNet was conceived in a meeting at OSU, initiated by president MacVicar. An attorney friend of Mac's persuaded to draw up Oregon incorporation papers pro bono. Possibly for resource reasons, it was decided to house the network at UW. NorthWestNet become one of the 8 regional hubs for NSFnet. The rest is history. Over the Next Decade NorthWestNet was a cornerstone of the emerging Internet. The state of Washington benefited in several ways: greater investment for the telecommunications industry greater development of technical expertise in the state accelerated evolution of high-tech industries better pricing of network services for higher education political and economic advantages in competing for federal and industry research awards In 1995 With the growth of the Internet and privatization of NSFnet in 1995, NorthWestNet became a for-profit entity. The sale of NorthWestNet by the Northwest Academic Computing Consortium (NWACC) resulted in millions of dollars of financial benefit to the state of Washington, and to the University of Washington in particular. The presence of NorthWestNet during the critical years of Internet's development contributed to rapid economic and technical growth within the state.
