Flávia Guedes interpreta a empregada.

“The best play by an American we have seen,” raved the Brooklyn Eagle; “an exceedingly juvenile performance,” lamented the New York Post. The mixed reviews of The Hairy Ape ’s first production in Greenwich Village in 1922 were not unusual for a new O’Neill play during that decade. Despite winning three Pulitzer Prizes for drama between 1920 and 1928, O’Neill repeatedly battled not only skeptical critics but also hostile censors, who resisted the staging of plays depicting interracial marriage ( All God’s Chillun Got Wings, 1924), infanticide ( Desire Under the Elms, 1924), and infidelity and abortion ( Strange Interlude, 1928). The controversy continues today, though its focus now is literary. O’Neill simultaneously spiritualized and democratized the modern stage by discovering “the transfiguring nobility of tragedy” in “seemingly the most ignoble, debased lives”—such as that of Yank Smith—thereby forging a trail later followed by Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. O’Neill’s keen ear for native dialects (like the Bronx accent of Yank) brought numerous varieties of spoken American English onto our stage in a serious way for the first time, an achievement comparable to that of Mark Twain in fiction.
If O’Neill’s literary merit is the subject of debate, his work’s autobiographical nature is not. His father was the famous actor James O’Neill, who became a wealthy man—and sacrificed much of his talent—by touring in the title role of the melodrama

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill (1888-1953) One of the greatest American playwrights, restless and bold experimenter, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936. Among O'Neill's best-known plays are ANNA CHRISTINE (pub. 1922), DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS (pub.1924), MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (pub. 1931), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT (pub. 1956), and THE ICEMAN COMETH (prod. 1946). O'Neill's plays range in style from satire to tragedy. They often depict people who have no hope of controlling their destinies. "... we all are more or less the slaves of conventions, or of discipline, or of a rigid formula of some sort." Eugene O'Neill was born in New York into an Irish-Catholic theatrical family. His early life was restless: his father, who was an actor, spent most of his career touring in the lead role of the popular melodrama The Count of Monte Cristo . In 1895 O'Neill was enrolled in the St. Aloysius Academy for Boys, and transferred in 1900 to the DeLa Salle Institute in Manhattan. During these years his mother's addiction to morphine left profound emotional scars on O'Neill growing. He also found out that his own birth had precipitated his mother's addiction. In 1902 Ella O'Neill tried suicide. After renouncing Catholicism, O'Neill entered in 1902 the Betts Academy in Stamford, a nonsectarian preparatory school. Six years later he entered Princeton University, but left if after a year. During this period he spent most of the time in the New York waterfront bars and brothels.

    http://www.hmg.hu/irok/xxszazad/amidrama/oneill.htm
Eugene O'Neill A huszadik század elsõ negyedében, párhuzamosan az avantgárd törekvések kísérleteivel, a színház mûvészetében és a bemutatott drámai mûvekben különbözõ tájakon egymástól eltérõ új formákat kerestek a rendezõk is, a szerzõk is, a kritikusok is. A drámai mûfaj továbbfejlesztõi a legnagyobb módosító hatásokat három igen jelentékeny szerzõtõl kapták. A sokáig nagy mûvészi izgalmakat keltõ Brecht legtöbb drámája a mi számunkra szájbarágó tanszöveg.
