The Cambridge Companion to Eugene O'Neill
    Edited by Michael Manheim
Hardback In stock This is a volume of specially commissioned essays containing studies of Eugene O’Neill’s life, his intellectual and creative forebears, and his relation to the theatrical world of his creative period, 1916–42. Also included are descriptions of the O’Neill canon and its production history on stage and screen, and a series of essays on ‘special topics’ related to the playwright, such as his treatment of women in the plays, his portrayals of Irish and African Americans, and his attempts to deal in dramatic terms with his parental family culminating in his greatest play, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. One of the essays speaks for those who are critical of O’Neill’s work, and the volume concludes with an essay on O’Neill criticism containing a select bibliography of full-length studies of the playwright’s work.

    Eugene O'Neill
Biography Eugene O'Neill was America's first major playwright and the first to fully explore serious themes as subject matter for the theater. He hailed from a stage family that followed his actor-father each year on the tour circuit. O'Neill began to write seriously when living in Greenwich Village in New York City and working with the Provincetown Players. His early plays were notable for their crude and colloquial dialogue, a far cry from the expected eloquence of the comedy of manners. Experimenting further with stark realism, O'Neill wrote several plays in which he traced a character's emotional decline into a primitive self. O'Neill never enjoyed perfect health: he struggled with alcoholism, nearly died of tuberculosis as a young adult, and in the 1930s began to suffer from Parkinson's disease. His output, however, was remarkable, with such works as The Emperor Jones The Hairy Ape Desire Under the Elms Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), and The Iceman Cometh (1946). In addition, he won four Pulitzer Prizes and the 1936 Nobel Prize in literature. O'Neill's strongly autobiographical Long Day's Journey into Night was first produced in 1956, three years after his death.

    Eugene O'Neill
Born:  New York City; October 16, 1888
Died:  Boston, Massachusetts; November 27, 1953 Entry by Herbert F. Janick Eugene O'Neill was born in a Broadway hotel and died in a Boston hotel. In between he lived in places such as Greenwich Village, Provincetown, Georgia, Bermuda, and California. The most stable site in his restless life was the Monte Cristo cottage in New London, Connecticut. It was to this eight-room cottage on Pequot Avenue, named after his actor-father's most famous role, that he would return regularly during the summers of the first twenty-five years of his life. His "sea mother," as O'Neill affectionately referred to the ocean, exerted a calming influence on him. The identification of O'Neill with Connecticut is commemorated by the fact that his house has been designated as a National Landmark and is the headquarters of the Eugene O'Neill National Theater Center. O'Neill's search for a spiritual home, symbolized by his many residences, is reflected in his life and writings. Until 1912 he was rebellious and self-destructive. An irresponsible wanderlust, drunkenness, divorce, and finally, physical breakdown with tuberculosis, characterized his troubled, aimless existence. His rebirth after a six-months stay in a Wallingford, Connecticut, sanitarium was dramatic. The production of his first play by the Provincetown Players in 1916 began a period of intense creative activity, culminating in 1936 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Starting in 1920, when his first full-length play was produced on Broadway, O'Neill wrote and produced nearly two dozen dramas including
