The Idea of Asia
by Anthony Milner and Deborah Johnson The idea of Asia is so easy to ridicule, and yet it tugs at the mind. It has a curious potency. It is sometimes referred to (for instance, by Australia's 1996 Boyer Lecturer, Pierre Ryckmans) as a European creation, brought into being for European purposes (Ryckmans, 1993:182). But it is much more than that. As semioticians would put it, 'Asia' is a free-floating signifier - a term the exact meaning of which is not settled. The signification of 'Asia' is, in fact, in contest and it is those who would identify themselves as 'Asians', who have most recently been at the forefront of the defining process. Yet, their involvement is not just a recent phenomenon. This paper will trace the historical contribution of Asian thinkers to our understanding of 'Asia'; will probe the bases for positing an Asian unity and some of the implications; and will indicate that it is Asian notions of 'Asia' which have influenced and redirected the 'Asia' discourse in the 1990s - a reality which may have significant repercussions for Australia. The Historical Development of Asian Notions of an Asian Unity and Identity 'Asia is one' declared the Japanese art historian, Okakura Tenshin (1862-1913) at the opening of this century.

69. Elixir Tonics & Teas: Tea Primer
Teaism is the art of concealing beauty that you may discover it, of suggestingwhat you dare not reveal. . – Kakuzo Okakura (18621913) The Book of Tea.
http://www.elixir.net/Tea-Primer.html
The world of whole-leaf, pure varietal teas
and tonic herbals
T here are thousands of varieties of tea in addition to a limitless combination of herbal and fruit beverages that are popularly referred to as "tea". Actually, only the beverage that derives from the camellia sinensis plant is truly tea. Machine harvesting, called CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) is convenient, efficient and popular and it's output makes its way around the world, traveling mostly in bags. Cut open a flow-through tea bag and you will likely find PF tea, meaning CTC produced Pekoe Fannings (small, dried, broken bits of leaves and twigs) or PD tea, Pekoe Dust (the lowest rating), sometimes referred to, literally, as "sweepings." Elixir's obsession with the highest quality, complete bud-and-whole-leaf, totally hand-processed teas, boils down to a matter of quality and quality alone. Whole-leaf teas are better, not only because they retain their delicate volatile oils, (unlike broken and ground leaf teas), but the entire experience that results in whole-leaf teas, from start to finish - the extraordinary effort that produces these perfect expressions of nature's bounty - is an endless world within a world within a world. Tea is but the gateway. "Teaism is the art of concealing beauty that you may discover it, of suggesting what you dare not reveal."

Japanese Buddhism
The Time Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, or the Lord Buddha, who lived from 560 to 480 BC. Since he did not write a single word of his teachings, they were handed down from one generation to the next by word of mouth. After the Lord Buddha's demise, his followers split into a number of factions, each with its own interpretations. Roughly 500 years later, two main groups emerged; Theravada (also called the Way of Elders) and Mahayana (the Greater Vehicle). Theravada sought to preserve the pure teachings of the Lord Buddha, while Mahayana was more liberal and flexible. Mahayana holds that not only priest who took Buddhist vows but also the laity can attain enlightenment. In Japan, Mahayana was introduced in the 6th century via China, and spread fast under the patronage of Imperial Prince Shotoku (574-622). He institutionalized it as the state religion and Buddhist priests worked as civil servants employed by the Imperial Court. Tendai (Tian-tai in Chinese) sect and Shingon (Ch'en-yen in Chinese) sect, a form of Chinese Tantric Buddhism, respectively. The

Zen and the Art of Tea, II
Two Zen-men were discussing Zen. One, named Chokei (Ch'ang-ch'ing Hui-ling, 853-932), said, "Even a fully enlightened arhat may be proclaimed to be still harboring something of the three poisonous passions, but as to the Buddha, he never makes an equivocal statement. Whatever he asserts is absolute truth. What do you say to this?" Hofuku (Pao-fu Ts'ung-chan, d. 928) asked, "What then is the Buddha's statement?" Chokei said, "The deaf cannot hear it." This was criticized by Hofuku: "You are coming down onto a secondary level." "What then is the Buddha's statement according to your judgment?" "Have a cup of tea, O my brother-monk." When Shozan (Sung-shan) the Zen teacher and lIo (P'ang Chushih) the Zen layman, both of the eighth century (T'ahg dynasty), were enjoying tea, Ho raised the takusu and said, "Each one of us has his, and why cannot he say something about it?" Shozan said, "It is just because each one of us has his that he is unable to say something about it." Ho retorted, "How is it then that you seem to be able to say something about it?"

... Életrajzi vázlat I. A tea egyetemes diadala A tea eredetileg orvosság gyanánt szolgált, ám az idõk során kedvelt frissítõ itallá vált szerte a világon. A VIII. századi Kínában bevonult a költészet világába is, mint a vendéglátás kifinomult módja. Japán a XV. században az esztéticizmus rangjára emelte a teázást, melynek kultusza a szépséget bálványozza a mindennapi élet alantas viszonyai közepette. A keleti demokrácia õsi szellemét képviseli, hiszen valamennyi követõjét a jóízlés arisztokratáinak rangjára emeli.

Okakura Kakuzo with an introducton by Toshoin no Seiho Genre: Eastern Philosophy / non-fiction The Author
Okakura Kakuzo (1862-1913) devoted his life to teaching, art, Zen, and the preservation of Japanese art and culture, working as an ambassador, teacher, writer, and, at the time of his death, as the Curator fo Chinese and Japanese Art at the Boston Museum. Book Description
Tea began as a medicine and grew into a beverage. In China, in the eighth century, it entered the realm of poetry as one of the polite amusements. The fifteenth century saw Japan ennoble it into a religion of aestheticismTeaism. Teaism is a cult founded on the adoration of the beautiful among the sordid facts of everyday existence. It inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order. It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.

Session 52: Rethinking Okakura Tenshin
Organizer and Chair: Fred G. Notehelfer , University of California, Los Angeles Discussant: Ellen P. Conant , Independent Scholar Okakura Kakuzô (Tenshin) (1862–1913) remains one of the most important, if enigmatic, figures in "interpreting" Japan to the outside word in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In Japan, he is known for the central role he played with Ernest Fenollosa and Kuki Ryûichi in preserving and cataloguing Japan’s art treasures in the Meiji Period. He was also important in founding Japan’s Fine Arts Academy (later Geidai Kokka Nihonga , that would combine Japanese and Western elements. Okakura traveled widely, first to China and India, and later to the West. After 1898 he became increasingly concerned about projecting Japanese art ideals abroad. He wrote extensively, producing a series of books that included The Ideals of the Fast (1903) and The Book of Tea (1906). In 1905 he became a part of the American intellectual world by settling down in Boston and serving as Assistant Curator of the Chinese and Japanese departments of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Nihonga China in the Mind of Okakura Kakuzo Jing He , University of California, Los Angeles The position of Okakura Kakuzô (Tenshin) as a seminal figure in the Meiji art movement is well established. What needs to be reconsidered is the role that China and Chinese culture played in the development of his art ideals. In his most important books
