FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NAGOYA/BOSTON MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS OPENS APRIL 17, 1999 Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is First American Museum to Launch Sister Museum in Asia; New Museum Plays Major Role in Cultural Life of Nagoya Monet, Renoir, and the Impressionist Landscape and Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World . There will also be a special installation of a Japanese 17th-century painted folding screen in the "Japanese Corner" of the museum. The new museum, adjacent to busy Kanayama train station, will be operated by the Foundation for the Arts, Nagoya (FAN). The N/BMFA will be the first museum in Japan to provide a comprehensive view of world art across all cultures and time periods. The N/BMFA will be directed by Tadao Ogura, who was previously the Director of the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art. "We have been preparing for this extraordinary partnership since 1991, and are proud to be part of such an historic moment," says Malcolm Rogers, Ann and Graham Gund Director, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. "For years we have been committed to sharing our great treasures with the people of Japan, sending exhibitions drawn from our collections across the Pacific. Because the Museum of Fine Arts has had a strong relationship with Japan for more than a century, it makes perfect sense to strengthen our cultural ties with Japan in the new millennium." "We are very excited about this new museum. The N/BMFA is a great source of pride for the people of Nagoya," says Kiichiro Ito, Chairman of the Foundation for the Arts, Nagoya. "We have built a bridge over the Pacific Ocean, from Nagoya to Boston—from the heartland of Japan, an industrial metropolis built upon hundreds of years of history and cultural heritage, to one of the most historic and important cities in the United States."

Japan, all periods, Bibliography
Be sure and check The Cultural Atlas of Japan as an opener. Much of the current ninja stuff from the likes of Paladin Press is a fantasy cult unto itself, but if you want to write a novel set in their world, then we bet you already have a lot of their books. The Charles E. Tuttle Company of Rutledge, Vermont, publishes a tremendous number of Japanese works in translation and scholarly English-language work: a copy of their catalog is a bibliography in itself. Also recommended are the Japan Travel Bureau Books sponsored by the Japanese government. We could not locate but one good book on costume, and that slim, but perhaps we haven't tried hard enough because we lazily just check in with Kabuki Hawai'i or the Honolulu Academy of the Arts when we have a question. See the monograph in this section. However, there is a new one out that is pretty good. Search for Books at

95. English Article
Among all the scholars in this discourse, I devote attention to OkakuraKakuzo (Tenshin) (18621913) with his reversed Hegelianism.
http://huhai.myrice.com/english/traver.htm
Japanizing Japan:
Thoughts on Traditions and Modernization at the Turn of 20th Century The keywords in modern Japan are without doubt "modernization" and "tradition." In this paper, I will discuss about these keywords and their relationships in late and 19th century and early 20th century when Japanese were confronted with problems of development and identity in the process of their modernization. Japan's modernization was not simplistically a progress of westernization, but included the rediscovering their "tradition" and repositioning their neighbor, China.
Thus, Japanese scholars actively and purposefully discovered and discussed Japanese tradition in order to explain Japan's modernization and reinforce its superiority to China. This paper attempts to review how Japanese scholars "imagined" Japanese traditions and handled China in their writings with their newly accumulated "power" through the process of modernization and triumphs of two international wars against China and Russia.
This paper is about how Japanese "Japanized" Japan during the formative period of Japan's modernization when people began to think that Japan's "tradition" not only existed, survived, and worked until then, but also was an alternative to embracing-all westernization. Such a traditionalist view is also the concern of this paper, in which I will select examples from 1870s to 1920s. This time span of half a century, which is enough for a much larger project, does not seem to be appropriate for this paper. However, the formation of traditionalistic discourse was a long course probably lasting until today and the examples narrated hereunder dotted in half a century epitomize this long course.
