The UMDNJ and Coriell Research Library presents... Sir William Osler In Honor of the Medical Library Association's Centennial, May 1998 The UMDNJ Camden Campus is located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, PA, where the Medical Library Association celebrated its Centennial in May 1998. In honor of a century of MLA, we highlight the life and writings of one of the Association's founders, Sir William Osler who, during his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, became a part of Camden 's history when he was called upon to consult on the health of Walt Whitman Dr. Osler studied medicine at McGill University and, after graduating and pursuing further studies in Europe, returned to McGill as a lecturer. In 1884 he became he moved to Philadelphia to become the Chair of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania . While there, he became a member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia , serving on their library committee. It was during this time that he began to visit Walt Whitman at his Camden home, a relationship that lasted until he left in 1889 to become Chief of Staff at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital.

He was educated at Trinity college, Toronto, Toronto school of medicine, and McGill university, where he was graduated as a physician in 1872. He subsequently studied at University college, London, and at Berlin and Vienna. He was professor of the institutes of medicine in McGill university in 18'74-'84, of clinical medicine in the University of Pennsylvania in 1884, Galstonian lecturer in the Royal college of physicians, London, in 1885, and Cartwright lecturer in the College of physicians and surgeons, New York, in 1886. Dr. Osler is physician to various hospitals, and is the author of "Clinical Notes on Small-pox" (Montreal, 1876) ; "Pathological Report, Montreal General Hospital" (1878) ; and "Histology Notes" (1882). He has also written for various medical journals in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.

Associated eponyms: Miller-Abbott tube A long (3 m) double-channel intestinal tube Biography: William Osler Abbott graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia in 1928 and was a physician in the gastrointestinal section of the medical clinic at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. army as a major in the Medical reserve Corps in May 1942, but was honourably discharged with physical disability in September of the same year and died of leukaemia. This may have followed the X-ray exposure he would have received in screening the position of the tube in volunteers and patients he investigated. Abbott was a nephew of William Osler, the W. O. of his own name. A witty man he once wrote in a petient’s chart as an intern, «The patient is a 53 year old spinster who, during her youth had symptoms from all her organs. As an adult she had her organs removed one by one. Now she is a mere shell with symptoms where her organs used to be.» One of the trainees of Miller and Abbott was Franz Ingelfinger.
