CALL NUMBER: WZ 100 O82BC 1999 The preface of this new biography asks the question “Was William Osler the greatest doctor in the history of the world?” If such a title exists, William Osler certainly seems to have been a leading nominee. He was widely known and admired during his era as a physician and teacher, and his book The Principles and Practice of Medicine, published in 1892, was a blockbuster in its day (Todd Wehr Library, WB 100 P957 1892). It went through many editions and predates other major textbooks of modern medicine. Osler taught at McGill, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, and Oxford. His Hopkins students’ “professional awe of their teacher shaded into deep affection.” The author of this biography, searching for feet of clay that might counter the seeming universal admiration of Osler by his peers and students, found little of consequence to detract from his beloved status, other than the criticism of research-oriented physicians that Osler never really discovered anything. Harvey Cushing wrote a 1,412 page biography of Osler in 1925 (Todd Wehr Library, WZ 100 O82c) that won a Pulitzer prize. So why the present volume of less than half that size? The author’s preface states the need to address questions Cushing left unanswered, and to take advantage of primary sources previously unavailable and other writing about Osler published subsequent to Cushing’s work.

William Osler's tribute to his mentor, Palmer Howard of Montreal, can properly be applied to Osler himself by those who practise medicine today. Osler is largely responsible for so many of the things which we take for granted in medicine medical education within a university environment, strong roots in basic science, application of scientific methods to clinical medicine, emphasis on bedside learning, involvement of students in hospital routines, and the residency system after medical graduation. The highlights of Osler's life and career are outlined in the Box . From a humble childhood, he became the best-known, most-admired and influential physician in the world. The peak of his career was the 16 years (1889-1905) spent as Foundation Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore. The new hospital and university had been endowed by the bachelor merchant Johns Hopkins, who had profited in the Civil War, but was aware of the poor standards of medical education which prevailed in its aftermath. The standard for Johns Hopkins was to be that "the seal of its diploma should be a guarantee that its possessor is not only a well educated physician in the fullest sense of the word, but that he has learned to think and investigate for himself, and is therefore prepared to undertake, without danger of failure from not knowing how to begin, the study of some of the many problems still awaiting solution".

Robert Fulford's column about William Osler
The Globe and Mail , November 30, 1999) After Sir William Osler's death in 1919, a British cabinet minister wrote to his widow, "nobody ever lived who had to such a remarkable degree the gift of making other people feel that life was worthwhile." That breathtaking compliment suggests one reason why circles of intense love and admiration surrounded Osler for most of his career: He could animate the people near him with the power of his own intelligence, energy and high spirits. He was the most influential doctor of his age and probably the greatest Canadian produced in the 19th century, but what seems most striking about him is his effect on others. How often can we say of a happy and successful man that he was the cause of happiness and success in those around him? Students and colleagues warmed themselves at the hearth of his personality, and his renown as a diagnostician brought him an amazing range of patients. As a fairly young man he treated Walt Whitman and, in later years, he treated both Henry James, the novelist, and his brother, William, the philosopher. In 1913, he examined the pale, thin, young Prince of Wales, who was later briefly Edward VIII. "He does not impress me as a very strong organism," Osler noted. Osler's sense of humour could get him in bizarre trouble.

The search for static security - in the law and elsewhere - is misguided. The fact is security can only be achieved through constant change, adapting old ideas that have outlived their usefulness to current facts. The desire to take medicine is perhaps the greatest feature which distinguishes man from animals. Study until 25, investigate until 40, profession until 60, at which age I would have him retired on a double allowance. No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by the successful teacher. The future is today. In science the credit goes to the man who convinces the world, not to the man to whom the idea first occurs. We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from life. Medicine William Osler. Oxford University Press has just published a 600page biographyof him by Michael Bliss, entitled William Osler A Life in Medicine.

Medicine: William Osler
Dr. Sidney Raffel of Stanford Medical School is a distinguished graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School, of which William Osler was a star. He speaks of Osler with great admiration not only as a doctor but as a human. He regrets that many medical students at Stanford do not know who Osler was. This is especially unfortunate as Osler had an indirect tie with Stanford.
Oxford University Press has just published a 600-page biography of him by Michael Bliss, entitled William Osler: A Life in Medicine . It should have a worldwide appeal, but especially so in Stanford, with which he had an indirect tie. Osler has a great appeal for me because I regard medicine as the noblest profession, and regret that much more publicity goes to modern popular writers like Hemingway and Gertrude Stein and artists like Picasso, who as humans were horrible people. Only a renewed sense of responsibility will save our civilization. Physicians have it to a degree which balances the lack of it in the latter group, the cult of whom makes one doubt the accuracy of the statement that you can't fool all the people all the time. Perhaps it is true however, since I suspect that many people feel as I do but are afraid to speak up for fear of being dismissed as unsophisticated, lowbrow, or reactionary.
Osler (1849-1919) led a saintly life free from professional vanity, marred by the death of his son in 1917, killed in Flanders. Both he and Johns Hopkins were testimony to the importance of religion in developing a sense of responsibility. He was the eighth of the nine children of the Rev. Featherstone Osler, a former officer in the Royal Navy who took holy orders and emigrated to Canada with his pious wife. Osler received his medical degree from McGill University and then went to teach at the University of Pennsylvania.

BOOK REVIEW

AN INDEFATIGABLE SPIRIT
William Osler:
Oxford University Press, 1999, 581 pages
). His textbook, The Principles and Practice of Medicine ), published in 1892, was an amazing success and unquestionably superceded all other medical textbooks of the era ( ) may be questionable. But an additional 75 years have not seen Osler's reputation fade away. Nonetheless, this time may allow the novel interpretation of Osler's life and influence. There was a call for a modern biography of Sir William Osler ( ) and, alas, it is here. William Osler: A Life in Medicine by Michael Bliss is a 581 page biography that has already received wide praise ( Anyone interested in the history of medicine should enjoy this book. Anyone interested in Osler will love it. William Osler: A Life in Medicine does not replace The Life of Sir William Osler ), instead, this second biography complements the first. Cushing's biography will remain a valuable source of information to anyone seeking to know the details of Osler's life, but to the modern reader, the writing seems dated and the book is unlikely to be read from cover to cover. In contrast, Bliss's book is a delightful read and one much better suited to today's readers, both in style and content. Perhaps most importantly though, in describing Osler's life and times, Bliss captures Osler's spirit. Osler was a role model and motivational force to thousands of students and colleagues during his life. With this book, Osler's spirit can continue to motivate students and physicians today.

The Sir William Osler Sesquicentennial Plaque Every speaker is given a plaque designed solely for Asklepian Aura. The plaque features a copper-dusted bust of the face of Sir William Osler, a pathologist-turned-internist who made myriad contributions to make medicine an art. He seemed to live by the following view of medicine: "The practice of medicine is an art not a trade, a calling not a business." Osler, extraordinary storehouse of energy and imagination, was born a minister's son into humble surroundings and went on to become the leading medical man of his age. He pioneered clinical research, revolutionized medical education and virtually created the modern hospital. He did not simply teach medicine; he taught the philosophy of medicine from his deep belief that the practice of it was an art and physicians could learn more at the bedside than in the lecture hall. He expressed those opinions considered progressive even today. His masterpiece, "The Principles and Practice of Medicine," first published in 1891, quickly became the bible of medical education the world over, providing a strong moral influence on modern medicine for generations. Perhaps no physician in history has ever contributed so much to so many of the facets his profession as this man, revered by many as "Saint Osler." The plaque is hand made by local sculptor Joel Rudnick, who has a studio in North Adams. Joel also makes belt buckles and jewelry.
