History of James Otis Kaler Collection
South Portland Public Library
James Otis Kaler (1848-1912) authored more than 150 children’s books during his 65 years. A native of Winterport, Maine, he went to Boston at age 13 and obtained a job as reporter on the Boston Journal. At age 16 he went off to cover the Civil War for his newspaper. This adventurous young life probably inspired him when he later wrote his many stories of boys facing the world. After more education and more newspaper work, Mr. Kaler, under the pen name of James Otis, published his most famous work, Toby Tyler, a story of circus life. It ran in installments in Harper’s Young People magazine in 1880 and continues today in print. The South Portland Library has copies of the many concerned letters young children wrote to the author as they followed Toby’s adventures for the first time. In 1898, Kaler returned to Maine as first superintendent of schools in the newly formed town of South Portland. Many of his later books are easy-reading, historical stories which were used as texts in the schools. He died after a short illness in 1912. In February of 1973, James Otis’s sons, Stephen Kaler and Otis Kaler and their children generously donated to the South Portland Library a collection of their father’s manuscripts, books and letters which became the nucleus of the James Otis Kaler Collection of nineteenth-century children’s books and local history. The collection was dedicated during a ceremony marking South Portland’s 75th anniversary as a city in July, 1973.
